UPDATE Aug. 3, 2023: It’s been confirmed that the teen show will return for a third installment! Deadline confirmed the renewal news, sharing the following statement from the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders:

Why The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 renewal was a no-brainer

We all know The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the best-selling book series of the same name by Jenny Han. There are three books in the series. The first season adapted the first book, The Summer I Turned Pretty, while the second season is based on the second book, It’s Not Summer Without You. 

We’re expecting, when the second season ends, that there is a lot more to the story. We’re fully expecting that story to be told in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, which should adapt the third and final book of the series, We’ll Always Have Summer. That’s what we’re hoping will happen, anyway.

On top of that, this show is very popular. Because it’s so new, we’re still waiting for the official streaming numbers, but there’s no doubt this is one of the biggest shows of the summer. Fans from all over the world are tuning in for season 2. For the most part, it seems like fans are pretty happy with the show’s execution and story up to this point in the season. We still have a few episodes left at the time of publishing.

So, there’s going to be more to the story and fans are into it. That’s the recipe for a quick renewal.

Why we might have to wait for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 started filming in July 2022. Production ran through November, and then we saw the season launch on Amazon Prime Video in July 2023.

The biggest reason for a potential delay is the fact that the WGA is on strike and so is SAG-AFTRA. I don’t think Amazon will be negotiating with the writers and actors during the strike about season 3, so that’s a problem.

So, putting it all together: The Summer I Turned Pretty was renewed on Aug. 3, but there are no scripts and there’s no starting production because the creative team and actors aren’t working until Amazon and the AMPTP negotiate a deal with the WGA and SAG.

So — and this is where the long wait is going to come in — the scripts and deals need to be worked out before anything is going to happen on The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3. The problem? Summer is nearly over! That’s a problem for production. I don’t think it works super well to film a summer show in the middle of winter, even with all the editing tricks they can do.

At best, we’d see the strikes end soon. Then, the writers get to work on season 3 this year, and production on season 3 would start in the spring of 2024, like March, and run through July. Then, we’d see The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 on Amazon Prime Video in late summer 2024, perhaps in September.

Again, that’s the best-case scenario.

If the powers that be cause things to be moved back even further, we could be waiting until the summer of 2025 until The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 is on Amazon. It’s not that hard to picture a scenario where the strikes continue in the fall and then production starts in July 2024.
