Best CW shows not coming in 2023: All American: Homecoming

On The CW’s original fall schedule, which has seen more than one change, All American: Homecoming wasn’t paired with its parent show, All American. The spin-off series hadn’t been looped into the deal that kept the Daniel Ezra-led program on the network for a sixth season. However, Simone Hick’s story did get a season renewal months later after the powers that be behind The CW determined how to move forward with the network’s remaining original scripted dramas in a cost-effective way.

This was good news for fans who’ve been riding with Simone (played flawlessly by Geffri Maya),  since her All American days and have fallen in love with the college slice-of-life, coming-of-age sports program that debuted in 2022. The series has something for everybody including TV viewers who are interested in tennis and baseball, two sports that aren’t often represented on broadcast in scripted shows.

Typically, Homecoming airs with its parent series in a two-hour block referred to as All American Mondays. But that may not be the case come 2024, at least not at first. The network has made it clear that they intend on airing the Courtney B. Vance series 61st Street in the 9 p.m. ET slot after new episodes of All American.

The legal drama CW acquired from AMC follows Moses Johnson, a Black high school athlete with a promising future that’s in jeopardy. Moses finds himself battling the corrupt Chicago criminal justice system after he’s labeled a gang member and accused of killing an officer in a drug bust that went left. He, and his lawyer Franklin Roberts, get swept up in a political firestorm as they combat a police force looking for revenge and prosecutors on the case who want revenge as well.

There are a total of eight episodes in the first season which could mean that Homecoming will debut its third season eight to nine weeks after All American returns. Or The CW could choose to air 61st Street‘s eight episode second season as well, keeping the show paired with All American until they both finish their runs.

If that’s the case Homecoming could be held until the spring of 2024. It’s possible that the start of tennis and baseball season could be factored in as well given CW’s sports initiative which may play into how they want to market the series. Both sports, which are a big part of the show, are covered heavily in the spring and the summer.

We should also note that fans should brace for changes on the show. Homecoming‘s renewal came with budget cuts, a reduced episode count (season 3 will have 13 episodes), and a reduction in series regular cast members.
