Meg 2: The Trench brings back the largest shark known throughout history. The Megalodon is certainly ferocious, but is it still around?

There’s nothing worse than finding out that there’s another apex predator that we need to worry about. That’s something movies tend to bring up. The Meg started it and now we have the sequel. Meg 2: The Trench is out in theaters, and it sees the characters face the largest shark known to man yet again.

This brings up a big question. Is the Megalodon still around? Is this a shark we should be concerned about? If it is extinct, what happened to it?

The Meg 2 Megalodon is an extinct shark

There’s some good news for those a little worried about the Meg 2 shark turning up in open waters. It’s bad news for the creatures. The Megalodon is one of those creatures that is extinct.

According to USA Today, the size of the shark contributed to it. Being such a large shark was great for survival when it came to other creatures in the ocean and defense systems, but it wasn’t great for food consumption. It needed a lot of food to survive, and there simply wasn’t that available three million years ago.

Climate change is a major concern now, but it’s something that happened way back in the past. Climate change brought about changes to the ocean, which led to a change in the distribution of the prey for the Megalodon.

It is worth noting that the oceans are massive. Only around 5% of the oceans have been explored, so there is a chance that the shark is still around somewhere in hiding. It’s what I love about the series Extinct or Unknown. However, the idea of this shark attacking the way that it does in Meg 2 is absurd. It makes for a good action thriller in the water though, doesn’t it?
