Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake release date and everything we know

Updated: Aug. 17, 2023 – Even though many panels at the San Diego Comic Con were upended by the SAG-AFTRA strike, we still got to see a few exciting trailers debut at the fan favorite convention. One such show is Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, a colorful spinoff of the beloved animated Cartoon Network staple Adventure Time, which ended its television run in 2018.

Discussed in detail during the Max Original Animation Presents panel, we’ve received a ton of new info about the show itself and when it will be released to streaming.

The characters Fionna and Cake first appeared in the original show in the third season, playing up the whimsical idea of switching the genders of the main characters Finn and Jake.  Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat became so popular from their multiple appearances on the show that a standalone Adventure time series starring the two was announced in 2021, to much excitement from the show’s varied fanbase. It’s also not the first spinoff from the Adventure Time series – there have been four hour-long Adventure Time specials, with each focusing on different characters in the Adventure Time universe. Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake will be the first focusing solely on these female counterparts of the original leads.

What will Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake be about?

As per Warner Bros Discovery’s description, the show will follow in the original’s adventurous and fantastical footsteps, where Fionna the human and Cake the cat will “embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.” It sounds like an adventure worthy of the Adventure Time universe, appealing to fans both young and old.

One of the most endearing things about the original Adventure Time was its ability to get real about life and relationships and the ups and downs one can experience, which is rare for an animated series aimed at children-it sounds like this new entry will continue that trend, seemingly going deeper into the emotions that will be encountered during the adventure. It’s good news for the fanbase, who revel in the lessons that the show creatively taught to its audience.

What is Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’s premiere date?

During the panel at comic con, not only was the release date of Aug. 31 announced, but a trailer was shown to the attendees. It starts with Fionna full of yearning for a life filled with magic, and struggling in her boring day to day life, while also pondering if her cat Cake is acting bizarrely for the same reason. We then see them hopping multiverses, battling bizarre creatures and meeting up with new friends along the way.

We’ll even see some characters who crossed over from the original Adventure Time series, like the Ice King, whose real name is discovered to be Simon Petrikov. The influence of the original show is very apparent, and that’s a great thing, as fans of Adventure Time will certainly enjoy jumping into this adjacent adventure.
