After another dramatic and game-changing summer in Cousins Beach, The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 ends in August 2023 with a season finale that everyone will surely be talking about. Each episode has had fans more and more excited for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3.

In the second season, Susannah’s death casts a large shadow over the lives of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, which changes dynamics and relationships between the three in major ways. Not to mention, the threatened sale of their beloved beach house sends them into action to save the last piece they have of Susannah.

Yes! On Aug. 3, a few weeks ahead of the season 2 finale, Amazon Prime Video announced that The Summer I Turned Pretty had been renewed for season 3. Since the renewal arrived in the midst of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the streamer was quick to note that the renewal occurred internally before the strikes.

Along with the renewal, Amazon also revealed that Jenny Han, who authored the books upon which the series is based, will be returning as showrunner. Han will be joined by Sarah Kucserka and executive producers Karen Rosenfelt and Gabrielle Stanton. With the core team set in place, Amazon also provide some great news about season 3’s episode count.

How many episodes is The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3?

While the first season of The Summer I Turned Pretty contained seven episodes and the season had eight, the streamer has increased the season 3 episode count to 10 total episodes. That’s amazing news for fans who want much more of this story. Currently, there’s no word on whether the episodes will be released weekly, all at once, or in batches.

Unfortunately, because of the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes, as of August 2023, the third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty has not started filming. The episodes have likely not even been written. The second season seemed to have started the writing and production process relatively quickly after season 1, but fans will be in a for a little bit of a wait for cameras to start rolling again in Cousins Beach.

Of course, the main love triangle trio will definitely be back for the next chapter of the story, along with Steven and Taylor to flesh out the group. The cast doesn’t seem primed for any shake-ups going into season 3, though some roles from season 2 could either be reduced or increased. We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.

What book is The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 based on?

The hit series is based on showunner Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty book trilogy. The first season adapted the titular first book, while the second season adapted It’s Not Summer Without You. Unless stories are stretched out or new stories are added, season 3 will likely adapt the third book, titled We’ll Always Have Summer, which was teased as the tagline in the renewal announcement video included above.

When could The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 come to Amazon Prime Video?

If you’re hoping season 3 will begin streaming by summer 2024, one year after season 2, you might be a bit disappointed. The second season was able to begin airing a little over a year after the hit debut season, but this time around, the series will have to contend with both the writers’ and actors’ strikes. While work would have probably have begun on season 3 by now, writing and production on the season will not be able to begin until both strikes are resolved.

As of this writing on Aug. 17, 2023, it’s anyone’s guess when that could be. Hopefully, the actors and writers guilds each receive the fair deal they deserve and each group can get back to doing what they love. It’s tough to estimate when The Summer I Turned Pretty could get back into production, but we would venture to guess that we could be waiting until sometime in 2024 for the bulk of the work on season 3 to begin for a premiere later that year.
