Monarch: Legacy of Monsters release date, cast, trailer and more

Updated: Sept. 8, 2023 – It’s time to do a unique monster mash. Apple TV+ has revealed the release date and first information on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the new live-action series expanding on the storylines of the Godzilla/King Kong films. In 2014, Legendary Films revived the Godzilla franchise with a new big-screen film showing the monstrous lizard rampaging around the world. In 2017, Kong: Skull Island premiered, showing the famous giant ape in a tale set in the 1970s. It also introduced Monarch, an organization tracking these creatures.

That led to 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which also had classic enemies like Rodan, Mothra, and others. The payoff was Godzilla vs Kong, as the two titans had their epic smackdown before joining forces against a greater foe.

Now, Apple TV+ is giving a focus on Monarch to show how they’ve been fighting the monsters longer than anyone realizes.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters release date

The series will premiere on Friday, Nov. 17 with its first two episodes before moving to a weekly release schedule.

What is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters about?

The saga spans from the 1950s to today, first following two siblings as they discover their father’s connection to Monarch. It then showcases Officer Lee Shaw, who encountered the beasts decades ago and now has some secrets that can lead to more chaos down the line.

Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the show will be a lead-in to 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire while building on the mythos of the Monsterverse.

"Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later, when Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The big name in the cast is Kurt Russell as Lee Shaw, the Army officer connected to Monarch. In a clever touch, Russell’s real-life son Wyatt plays the younger Lee in the 1950s. The cast also includes Kiersey Clemons and Anna Sawai as the siblings pulled into this.
