Summer is coming to an end, which means we’re going back to school for the upcoming teen sex comedy Bottoms. The movie is set to hit theaters nationwide very soon! The film had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Festival on March 11, 2023, to positive reviews and is now in theater houses at a limited capacity before expanding to more cities on Sept. 1!

Bottoms was directed by Emma Seligman (Shiva Baby) from a script written by Seligman and one of the stars of the film, Rachel Sennott (The Idol). It is produced by Orion Pictures and Brownstone Productions, with Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman, and Alison Small producing for Brownstone Productions, and Alana Mayo producing for Orion Pictures.

The film’s premise revolves around two high school senior girls who set up a “fight club” to hook up with cheerleaders before they graduate. While that sounds like an original and culturally relevant storyline, it may also make you wonder if the film is age appropriate for all teens. If you want to know the answer to that question, read on to find out!

Is the teen comedy Bottoms appropriate for kids?

The MPAA gave Bottoms a R rating for crude sexual content, pervasive language and some violence. Though the film is set in high school, the violent sequences play on the amateur fight club aspect of the film’s storyline. As such, you can expect to see lots of punching, slapping, kicking and more.

According to Seligman, Bottoms is a “campy queer high school comedy in the vein of Wet Hot American Summer, but more for a Gen-Z queer audience.” Sennott described the film as “two girls in a classic American football town who start a fight club under the guise of female empowerment, but it’s actually so they can have sex with cheerleaders.”

Essentially, if you’re between the ages of 17-24, this movie might be right up your alley. This film is the raunchy teen comedy to end the summer on before you go back to school. That being said, the younger end of the target audience might not understand or digest all of the themes in the film so use your own judgement if you are a parent or guardian of a younger teen.
