The Nun 2 ending explained: What happens at the end of the movie?

The Nun 2 is now playing in theaters and sees the evil Valak return stronger than before. Did Sister Irene manage to defeat the demon once and for all? If you watched the movie already, you know the answer, so let’s break down those terrifying final moments.

Did you know that the Conjuring universe movie series is the highest-grossing horror franchise? And rightfully so! While, sure, not all movies in the haunting series are winners, there’s no denying that they are all entertaining and have kept us on the edge of our seats. The Nun 2 marks the eighth chapter in the franchise and serves as a sequel to 2018’s The Nun. 

The character of the demon Valak has appeared before in other Conjuring films, so audiences were hoping the sequel would explain the connection further. And we were not disappointed. Spoiler alert!

What is The Nun 2 about?

The Nun 2 picks up about four years after Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) first meets Valak. With the help of Father Burke (Demian Bichir) and town local Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), Sister Irene defeats the demon Valak…or so they believe. What Sister Irene later finds out, is that Valak managed to possess Maurice in the final moments.

In the movie, Irene and Sister Debra discover that, this time, Valak is after the sacred eyes of Saint Lucy, a saint of the blind who was murdered by Pagans. The sister’s mission is to find the eyes before Valak does through a possessed Maurice.

Does Sister Irene die in The Nun 2?

No! Sister Irene comes out victorious (I mean, for now, anyway) and takes down Valak, freeing Maurice. But is the nightmare over? Far from it. Remember, these events all happened before The Conjuring, and we know that the Warren’s will perform an exorcism on Maurice, so it’s not the last time we’ll see Valak.

Does Maurice/Frenchie die in The Nun 2?

Maurice survives the nightmare. Sister Irene frees him from the demon, or so they all think. In the final scene, we see a happy Maurice, but Sister Irene doesn’t look very convinced that Maurice is safe. And as we’ve seen from other chapters in the franchise, Valak will be back.
