The last time each NFL team went to the Super Bowl (All 32 NFL teams)

The 2023 NFL season is here! Football fans around the country, and across the globe, are set to block out time in their schedules to tune into hours of games and coverage as they hold out hope that their favorite team will make it to the Super Bowl.

There are a total of 32 teams in the league but not all of them have won multiple league championship, a handful haven’t even attended the prized big game. Whether you’re new to NFL history, or you’ve read up on the franchise teams who have your heart, there’s plenty to learn about who has fought on a Super Bowl field and whether they’ve won.

The following list, in alphabetical order by the city or state a team hails from, is a complete rundown of when a team went to the big game last, if they won, who they played against, and where. It also contains information on their other Super Bowl appearances throughout the decades. So, without further ado, here’s what we know about the 32 NFL teams’ last shots at the title!

Note: The names of cities and stadiums mentioned in the below coverage are based on what they were named at the time the game was played and do not reflect their current monikers.

When was the last time the Arizona Cardinals went to the Super Bowl?

While the Cardinals have made plenty of appearances in the playoffs since they joined the National Football League in 1920, they’ve actually only attended the Super Bowl once. They’d won the NFC championship in 2008, leading them to play in the Big Game on Feb. 1, 2009 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. They lost by four points at Super Bowl XLIII in a tight game that totaled at 27-23.

When was the last time the Atlanta Falcons went to the Super Bowl?

The Falcons’ last try at winning the league championship was at Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5, 2017. They faced-off with the New England Patriots at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX. But the odds were not in their favor. The Patriots won the game with a score of 34, six points more than the Falcons’ 28. They’d only been to the Super Bowl once before during the 2008 season and had lost against the Broncos in the 33rd league championship on Jan. 31, 1999 at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, FL. The score was 34-19.

When was the last time the Baltimore Ravens went to the Super Bowl?

Though the Ravens can only claim two tries at winning the Super Bowl, they were successful at both. The team won Super Bowl XXXV in 2001, completely demolishing the New York Giants with a score of 34-7. The game took place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL on Jan. 28.

Then, 12 years later, the Ravens went to Super Bowl XLVII and pulled out with the win against the San Francisco 49ers, beating them to a narrow victory of 34-31. The teams faced off at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 3, 2013.

When was the last time the Buffalo Bills went to the Super Bowl?

In a four year streak, the Bills were AFC champions from 1990-1994. However, they didn’t secure the ultimate victory either time they made it to the Big Game.

Super Bowl XXV: Lost to the New York Giants who edged them out for the win with a score of 20-19 at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, FL on Jan. 27, 1991.
Super Bowl XXVI: The Washington Redskins (now the Commanders) defeated the Bills 37-24 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Jan. 26, 1992.
Super Bowl XXVII: The Dallas Cowboys ran away with the game beating the Bills by 35 points, the final score was 52-17. They played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on Jan. 31, 1993.
Super Bowl XXVII: Going up against the Cowboys again, they lost to them once more but by a smaller margin with a score of 30-13. The teams went head-to-head at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Jan. 30, 1994.

When was the last time the Carolina Panthers went to the Super Bowl?

The Panthers’ last Super Bowl appearance was a historic one as they got to play in the 50th league championship. They, however, didn’t have an excellent showing against the Denver Broncos as they lost 24-10 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Feb. 7, 2016.

Prior to that, they’d played in their first ever Super Bowl on Feb. 1, 2004. It was the 38th league championship and the Panthers squared off against the New England Patriots. It was a tight game, but they lost 32-29.

When was the last time the Chicago Bears went to the Super Bowl?

The Bears have been to the Super Bowl twice but have only won the big game once. That was in the 1985 season when they matched up with the New England Patriots. They swept the game away, winning at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 26, 1986 by a whopping 36 points. The final score at Super Bowl XX was 46-10.

21 years later, the Bears played in the 41st league championship, but the odds were not in their favor. The Indianapolis Colts beat them 29-17 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL on Feb. 4, 2007. Last time: 16 years ago.

When was the last time the Cincinnati Bengals went to the Super Bowl?

While the Bengals have been to the big game three times, they’ve never won. Their last showing was on Feb. 13, 2022 at Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. They were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams, it was an incredibly close game but the Rams pulled out the win with a score of 23-20. Last time: A year ago.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ other Super Bowl appearances:

16th league championship: Bengals vs. San Francisco 49ers at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan on Jan. 24, 1982. Lost. 26-21.
23rd league championship: The Bengals faced the 49ers again but lost once more, 20-16. The game took palce at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami on Jan. 22, 1989.

When was the last time the Cleveland Browns went to the Super Bowl?

The Browns are one of four NFL teams who’ve never been to the Super Bowl. The team had gone through a playoffs drought for 18 years prior to their appearance in 2021. With the 2023 season upon us, perhaps the odds will finally be in their favor.

When was the last time the Dallas Cowboys went to the Super Bowl?

The Dallas Cowboys have been to the Super Bowl a whopping eight times, winning five of the matches, but never in the 21st century. Their last time at the big game was on Jan. 28, 1996 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ. The team played against the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning the game by 10 points with a score of 27-17. Last time: 27 years ago.

The Dallas Cowboys’ other Super Bowl appearances:

5th league championship: Their opponent was the Baltimore Colts (now the Indianapolis Colts). The game took place on Jan. 17, 1971 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL. The Cowboys lost by three points. The score was 16-13.
6th league championship: The Cowboys defeated the Miami Dolphins at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, LA on Jan. 16, 1972. They carried the game, 24-3.
10th league championship: The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cowboys on Jan. 18, 1976 with a score of 21-17. The game took place at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL.
12th league championship: This game marked the Cowboys second league championship win. They snatched victory from the Denver Broncos with a 17 point lead (score 27-10). The game was on Jan. 15, 1978 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA.
13th league championship: In their second Super Bowl match up, the Steelers pulled ahead of the Cowboys in a tight game that ended with a score of 35-31. The game took place Jan. 21, 1979 at the Miami Orange Bowl in Miami, FL.
27th league championship: On Jan. 31, 1993, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, the Buffalo Bills lost to the Cowboys by a stunning score of 52-17 in a landslide win.
28th league championship: The following year on Jan. 30, 1994, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA, the Bills once again lost to the Cowboys. While they did fair a bit better, the score still wasn’t tight, 30-13.

When was the last time the Denver Broncos went to the Super Bowl?

The Broncos won Super Bowl 50. They went up against the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA on Feb. 7, 2016. The score was 24-10 and their win marked their third league championship victory. Last time: 7 years ago.

The Denver Broncos’ other Super Bowl appearances:

12th league championship: The Broncos lost by 17 points against the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 15, 1978 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA. The score was 27-10.
21st league championship: The New York Giants ran away with the win on Jan. 25, 1987 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. The Broncos lost by 19 points (39-20).
22nd league championship: The game was out of the Broncos hands when they went up against the Washington Redskins (now the Commanders). The latter team won 42-10 on Jan. 31, 1988 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, CA.
24th league championship: Again the Broncos didn’t have a good showing, this time in a match up with the San Francisco 49ers who won 55-10 on Jan. 28, 1990, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA.
32nd league championship: The Broncos were the victors when they faced the Green Bay Packers on Jan. 25, 1998 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA. The score was 31-24.
33rd league championship: It was a back-to-back victory for the team when they won the Super Bowl again on Jan. 31, 1999 at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, FL. They won by 15 points (34-19).
48th league championship: When the Broncos faced the Seattle Seahawks on February 2, 2014 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, the odds were not in their favor. They lost by 35 points (43-8).

When was the last time the Detroit Lions went to the Super Bowl?

Like the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions have never been to the Super Bowl. The team holds the record for the longest post season drought in the league. They’ve only won one playoff game and that was during the 1991 season. It’s been over 30 years since they’ve defeated another team during the post season, though they have made eight appearances in the playoff since then, the most recent being the 2016 season six years ago.

When was the last time the Green Bay Packers went to the Super Bowl?

The Green Bay Packers have won all but one of their Super Bowl appearances, the team also played in the very first league championship on Jan.15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA. They won the match against the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 35-10.

The last time they attended the big game was in 2011 during the 45th league championship. The Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Feb. 6 of that year at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX. It was a tight game, with the Packers winning 31-25. Last time: 12 years ago.

The Green Bay Packers’ other Super Bowl appearances:

2nd league championship: On Jan. 14, 1968, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, the Packers faced the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) and earned their second consecutive Super Bowl win with a score of 33-14.
31st league championship: The Packers defeated the New England Patriots on Jan. 26, 1997 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA. With a 14 point lead, the win was theirs (35-21).

When was the last time the Houston Texans went to the Super Bowl?

The Houston Texans are the third NFL team that have never been to the Super Bowl. They’ve made six playoff appearances, making it to the divisional rounds but falling short of being able to play in the conference championship. Their last playoff appearance was during the 2019 season.

When was the last time the Indianapolis Colts went to the Super Bowl?

The Indianapolis Colts have won two out of four of their Super Bowl appearances. Their last shot at winning the league championship was back in 2010. They played the New Orleans Saints at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL on Feb. 7 and lost 31-17. Last time: 13 years ago.

3rd league championship: The first time the Colts attended the league championship, they were playing as a Baltimore team. They lost to New York Jets by 9 points on Jan. 12, 1969 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL. The final score was 16-7.
5th league championship: The Colts won their first championship on Jan. 17, 1971 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL. At the time, they were a Baltimore team. They beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13.
41st championship: On Feb. 4, 2007, at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears with a score of 29-17.

When was the last time the Jacksonville Jaguars went to the Super Bowl?

The fourth and final NFL team that’s never been to the Super Bowl is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unlike the Detroit Lions, they have won games in the playoffs but they’ve never secured a shot at the conference championship. The Jaguars have made eight playoff appearances, the most recent was during the 2022 season.

When was the last time the Kansas City Chiefs went to the Super Bowl?

The Kansas City Chiefs had the privilege of playing against the Green Bay Packers in the first ever Super Bowl game on Jan.15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA. They lost by 25 points, with the game ending at 35-10.

They’ve come a long way since then as they’re the reigning champs, having defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The game was a close one but the Chiefs secured the win at 38-35.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ other Super Bowl appearances:

4th league championship: On January 11, 1970, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, LA, the Chiefs won their first Super Bowl, defeating the Minnesota Vikings by 16 points (23-7).
54th league championship: In a match up with the San Francisco 49ers on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, the Chiefs walked away with the win thanks to a score of 31-20.
55th league championship: The Chiefs were blown out of the water when they faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL (which is also the latter team’s home stadium). The Buccaneers beat them by 22 points (31-9).

When was the last time the Las Vegas Raiders went to the Super Bowl?

The Raiders haven’t appeared in a Super Bowl under their Las Vegas banner, however, in the franchise’s history, they’ve been five times. All of which were played as the Oakland Raiders. The last was Super Bowl XXXVII on Jan. 26, 2003 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA. They played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and lost by 27 points (48-21). Last time: 20 years ago.

2nd league championship: The team lost to the Green Bay Packers on Jan. 14, 1968 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL. The Packers beat them by 19 points (33-14).
11th league championship: They faced off with the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 9, 1977 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. They won the big game for the first time with a score of 32-14.
15th league championship: On Jan. 25, 1981, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA, the Raiders won their second championship, shutting the Philadelphia Eagles out with a 17 point lead (27-10).
18th league championship: The Raiders left it all on the field when they went up against the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) on Jan. 22, 1984, at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, FL. The score was 38-9.

When was the last time the Los Angeles Chargers went to the Super Bowl?

The Chargers have only gone to the Super Bowl once, back when they played under the San Diego banner. It was the 29th league championship which took place on Jan. 29, 1995 at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, FL. Their opponents were the San Francisco 49ers. While the latter didn’t wipe the floor with them, they did carry the game away thanks to a 23 point lead (49-26).

Since then, they’ve made the playoffs 20 times, making their way through the divisional rounds but unable to secure a try at the conference championship. They made the playoffs during the 2022 season but lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the Wildcard rounds.

When was the last time the Los Angeles Rams went to the Super Bowl?

The Rams won their first Super Bowl as a Los Angeles team on Feb. 13, 2022. They played against the Cincinnati Bengals in the 41st league championship at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The score was 23-20, making it a very tight game. Last time: A year ago.

14th league championship: The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 20, 1980, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. The Steelers beat them by 12 points (31-19).
34th league championship: The Rams, playing as a St. Louis team, won their first championship on Jan. 30, 2000 at the Georgia Dome at Atlanta, GA. They overtook the Tennessee Titans for the win with a score of 23-16.
36th league championship: On Feb. 3, 2002 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA, the Rams, playing as a St. Louis team, clashed with the New England Patriots but they did not come out the victors. They lost by 3 points (20-17).
53rd league championship: While they didn’t let the Patriots run away with the game on Feb. 3, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA, the Rams still lost by 10 points. (13-3).

When was the last time the Miami Dolphins went to the Super Bowl?

The Miami Dolphins have been to the Super Bowl five times but each appearance happened in the 20th century. Their last shot at the championship was on Jan. 20, 1985 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, CA during the 19th league championship. They lost to the San Francisco 49ers 38-16. Last time: 37 years ago.

The Miami Dolphins’ other Super Bowl appearances:

6th league championship: The big game took place on Jan. 16, 1972, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, LA. Their opponents were the Dallas Cowboys, who beat them by 21 points (24-3).
7th league championship: The Dolphins won their first championship on Jan. 14, 1973 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA. They defeated the Washington Redskins (now the Commanders) by scoring twice the points (14-7).

When was the last time the Minnesota Vikings went to the Super Bowl?

Jan. 9, 1977. That was the last time the Minnesota Vikings attended the Super Bowl. The game was the 11th of its kind. They faced the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA and lost 32-14. They’ve never won a Super Bowl match.

They’ve been 11 times, six of which they’ve won. This includes their last appearance on Feb. 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA where they defeated the Los Angeles Rams with a score of 13-3 at the 53rd championship. The New England Patriots’ other Super Bowl appearances

20th league championship: The Chicago Bears left no prisoners when they beat the Patriots on Jan. 26, 1986 at Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, LA with a score of 46-10.
31st league championship: The team also lost 11 years later on Jan. 26, 1997. This time to the Green Bay Packers at the same stadium. However, it was a closer game. They lost by 14 points (35-21).
36th league championship: The Patriots secured their first championship win on Feb. 3, 2002, breaking their Super Bowl losing streak at the Louisiana Superdome 16 years after their first appearance. They clawed the win away from the St. Louis Rams (now the Los Angeles Rams) with a three point lead (20-17).
38th league championship: Their second win took place on Feb. 1, 2004 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, TX. They defeated the Carolina Panthers in yet another close game. The score was 32-29.
39th league championship: The Patriots went for the repeat at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL on Feb. 6, 2005 and they got it. The Philadelphia Eagles fought valiantly, but the team lost by three points. The Patriots edged them out with a score of 24-21.
42nd league championship: The team’s winning streak broke at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ on Feb. 3, 2008 when they played against the New York Giants. It was a tight game, but the Giants prevailed over the Patriots with a score of 17-14.
46th league championship: The Giants and the Patriots faced off again on Feb. 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN. This time the Giants won 21-17.
49th league championship: It took the Patriots 10 years to win another championship. The game took place on Feb. 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. They won 24-21 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles played in Super Bowl LVII. They, however, weren’t the victors as they lost on Feb. 12, 2023 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. It was a tight game. The Chiefs won by a three point lead, the score was 38-35.

15th league championship: In their first try at winning the big game, the Eagles faced the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders), but they came up short on a win. They were defeated at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA on Jan. 25, 1981. The Raiders won with 27 points, the Eagles scored 10 points.
39th league championship: This was another loss. On Feb. 6, 2005 at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL, the team gave the New England Patriots a run for their money, but ultimately did not prevail. The score was 24-21.

14th league championship: The following year on Jan. 20, 1980, the team went for the repeat and succeeded. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.
30th league championship: The Steelers third match up with the Cowboys ended in their first defeat at the big game. The Cowboys overcame them with a score of 27-17 on Jan. 28, 1996 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ.
40th league championship: It would be a decade before the team not only secured an appearance at the championship but also won. On Feb. 5, 2006 at Ford Field in Detroit, MI, the Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks by 11 points (21-10).

7th league championship: The Commanders made their first appearance in 1973 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA. The game took place on January 14. They lost to the Miami Dolphins by 7 points (14-7).
17th league championship: A decade later, the team won their first championship on Jan. 30, 1983 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. They faced the Dolphins again and this time came out the victors with a score of 27-17.
18th league championship: Unfortunately for the Commanders, they weren’t able to secure a repeat win on Jan. 22, 1984, at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, FL. They lost to the Los Angeles Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) by a wide margin, 38-9.
22nd league championship: Four years later they were victors again. The Denver Broncos lost to the Commanders spectacularly on Jan. 31, 1988 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, CA. The score was 42-10.
