* UPDATE 9/18/23 – Following the backlash of choosing to return, The Drew Barrymore Show will no longer bring back and air new episodes while the writers are on strike, per an Instagram post by the actress. The series will air repeats in the meantime, according to Variety. The Talk and The Jennifer Hudson Show, which had also planned to return with new seasons, have also reversed their decisions and no new episodes will air from either show either until the strike comes to an end.

While many talk shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and more have kept their lights off and not created new episodes amid the writers strike and the actors strike, The Drew Barrymore Show on CBS has decided to move forward with a new season.

Season 4 premieres Monday, Sept. 18, 2023. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) have been on strike since May 2, 2023, while the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) officially went on strike on July 14, 2023. Since then, production on films, scripted shows, and even late-night talk shows has been halted.

However coming up soon, The Drew Barrymore Show has decided to air new episodes. What is that going to look like? We’ve got the answer for you below.

The Drew Barrymore Show returns despite strikes

The fourth season will feature “cutting-edge guests and key influencers,” per a press release. Some of those we’ll be seeing are celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton, Drew’s News co-anchor Ross Matthews, interior designer Mikel Welch, chef Pilar Valdes, and sustainable living guru Danny Seo.

The show will see the return of segments like Drew-Gooders, Design by Drew, and Cookbook Club, as well as the introduction of a new one – Take Care Everywhere. In this segment, Drew and Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, who is the founder of The Menopause Bootcamp, answer questions women may be “too embarrassed to ask their own doctors.”

And though a part of the daytime talk show is interviews with celebrities, it seems like no Hollywood guests will be on the series. With the news that The Drew Barrymore Show season 4 is a go this fall, the actress and host posted a statement on Instagram explaining her reasoning to get the show going once again. We shared a part of it below:

"However, I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me. I own this choice. We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time. I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience. I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible. We have navigated difficult times since we first came on air. And so I take a step forward to start season 4 once again with an astute humility."

The WGA also posted a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) in response to the show’s decision to make a return amid the strikes. We shared the group’s statement below:

"The @DrewBarrymoreTVShow is a WGA covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on The Drew Barrymore Show is in violation of WGA strike rules."

In terms of the actress being a part of SAG-AFTRA, she is allowed to host as talk shows, game shows, competition series, and the like as they are allowed to film because they fall under something called the Network Code, per The Hollywood Reporter. The Drew Barrymore Show does employ WGA writers and has chosen to continue work without them, which is why the guild released the above statement on social media.

The Drew Barrymore Show season 4 premieres Monday, Sept. 18, 2023 on CBS.
