P-Valley season 3 release updates and everything we know so far

Who’s ready to head back to the Pynk for more exciting and inspirational storylines? P-Valley season 3 is officially happening!

The Starz drama series premiered back in 2020 and was created by Katori Hall, based on her play P***y Valley. We’re now past the one-year mark since the season 2 finale aired in Aug. 2022, and understandably, fans are growing more and more impatient each day without new episodes. Although we don’t know when exactly the show is returning, we do have other information to share with you all.

P-Valley features an ensemble cast as it follows intertwining storylines of characters in Chucalissa, Mississippi. The cast includes Brandee Evans as a former dancer named Mercedes, Elarica Johnson as a newbie to the club in season 1, Autumn Night, Nicco Annan as the non-binary manager of the club, Uncle Clifford, and Shannon Thornton as a mother and dancer named Miss Mississippi.

Fans love P-Valley for its empathetic portrayal of marginalized groups, shedding light on the struggles they face and providing representation of underrepresented communities. It was a no-brainer that the Starz series would be renewed for another season. Here’s everything we know about the third installment!

P-Valley season 3 is definitely happening

Though fans had to wait a few months after season 2 concluded to get the good news, it was confirmed in Oct. 2022 that P-Valley season 3 is happening! In a statement, Hall shared her excitement over the renewal in an Instagram post, writing in her caption:

"“I am blessed beyond measure for this opportunity to write the next chapter of P-Valley. With its complex, dynamic and beautifully flawed characters, this show is a love letter to marginalized communities in the American South who rarely see themselves reflected on screen, and it brings me immense joy to know that it has been embraced by folx worldwide. We wouldn’t be getting back up on that pony, without our fiercely devoted Pynk Posse. Y’all are our fire.”"

Fans flocked to Hall’s comments section to express their enthusiasm over the renewal.

Is Elarica Johnson (Autumn Night) returning for P-Valley season 3?

Sadly, fans shouldn’t expect Autumn Night to appear in the third season of P-Valley because actress Elarica Johnson has confirmed she has exited the show. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she revealed that the decision was her choice, explaining that she felt her character’s storyline had run its course:

"“It’s something I discussed with Katori [Hall]. Looking at the scripts this season, and the journeys of the characters and where the Pynk was going, Autumn’s journey felt like it was coming to an end. She has done what she needed to do and it was time for her to move on.”"

Fans will certainly miss seeing Johnson on our screens in P-Valley season 3.

How many episodes is P-Valley season 3?

Good news, P-Valley fans! When we got the renewal for season 3, it was also confirmed that the new season will contain 10 episodes total. That’s two more than season 1 and the same amount of episodes as season 2.

The writers’ strike has delayed P-Valley season 3

The bad news about P-Valley season 3 at this time, however, is that it’s delayed. The WGA strike (writers’ strike) continues through September, and Katori Hall herself has confirmed the show will not begin filming until the strike is over. She took to Twitter in May to set the record straight, explaining that writers are needed on set during filming because her “writing & producing duties are inextricably linked.” And that totally makes sense.

And now, the actors are striking as well, so even if Hall was on board to start filming, the cast simply can’t.

We’re hoping the scripts for P-Valley season 3 are done so that when the writers’ strike and the actors’ strike end, they can begin filming soon after. At the time of this writing, neither the Writers Guild of America (WGA) nor the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have yet to come to an agreement to renew their contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). P-Valley season 3 was supposed to start filming in summer 2023

Earlier this year before the strikes began, Gail Bean, who plays Roulette in P-Valley, appeared on the Pour Minds podcast where she revealed that filming for the third season would begin this summer, with the release expected to be in 2024. Well, unfortunately, we know the third season did not start this summer, and now that we’re about to be in the fall, we still don’t have a filming start in sight.

The writers and actors are still striking as of September 2023, and it’s anyone’s guess when the studios will come around to offer them better terms.

Does P-Valley season 3 have a release date?

Because P-Valley season 3 has not begun filming, there is no release date. And there’s really no way of knowing when exactly the show might return because it all depends on how long the writers’ and actors’ strikes will go on. The first two seasons premiered on Starz in June and July, respectively, so it would make sense if fans are expecting season 3 in the summer of 2024.

If the strikes start soon and filming begins before the end of the year, we could still see season 3 premiering in the summer of 2024, but this is all speculation for now. The longer we go without the studios compromising, the longer productions are being pushed back.

Fingers crossed, however, that the writers and studios come to an agreement sooner than later and we might get P-Valley season 3 sometime in 2024. But as of now, we definitely know a 2023 premiere date for season 3 is not possible.
