Only Murders in the Building filming locations: Where is the series filmed?

Only Murders in the Building has been one of Hulu’s biggest hits shows that uses New York City as a key setting. But is it really filmed in the Big Apple and where?

Only Murders in the Building focuses on Broadway producer Oliver (Martin Short) and semi-has-been actor Charles (Steve Martin), who join forces with quirky Mabel (Selena Gomez) after a neighbor in their fancy New York City brownstone is murdered. As they try to solve the crime, the trio also do a podcast on their own bumbling and humorous attempts to figure out who the killer is.

The current third season has the trio looking into the murder of actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) while Oliver is trying to resurrect his career with a wild new musical. That puts a focus on Broadway, with New York City continuing to be a big deal for the series and its great fun.

So, is the show really filmed in Manhattan and what locations are used?

Where is Only Murders in the Building filmed?

First of all, yes, the series is filmed on location in New York City. The main building, the Arconia, is actually called the Belnord and is notable for being the home of famous actors like Zero Mostel, Walter Matthau and Lee Strasberg.

Speaking to The Wrap, showrunner John Hoffman explained the Belnord just fit perfectly for its old-styled architecture and the courtyard.

"“We knew we wanted a courtyard. I had sort of built the idea in my head a little bit off of the Apthorp, which is one of the more elegant ones on the Upper West Side and knew that that was probably going to be out of reach for us to work with and it proved to be that was the case. So we were looking for a model on that…and the Belnord surprised us all and kind of raised their hand as potential for us.”"

As it happens, the Belnord is only used for exterior shots as most of the interior scenes were filmed at 270 Riverside Drive, including the lobby. The series also extensively uses New York locations from the Bronx to Coney Island to other famous neighborhoods and even the NY Supreme Court building. For the Pickle Diner, the show uses the Mansion Restaurant located on the Upper East Side.

Per Untapped New York, for season 3, the show uses the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights and the 42nd Street Stages for their theater shoots. In many ways, New York City is as much a character as anyone else on the show to give Only Murders in the Building a great vibe that makes it a hit.
