Inspired by true events, the film The Burial follows the story of a funeral home owner about to lose his family business because of a greedy corporation. Played by Tommy Lee Jones, the family business owner works with an unconventional and charismatic attorney, played by Jamie Foxx, to try and save the business while exposing the corruption behind the corporation.
Jones and Foxx’s characters are described as an “unlikely pair” who form a connection — and common enemy — in their journey to win the case. The film is optimistic, and based on the energy from the trailer, it’s a comedic and heartwarming movie. The film takes viewers back to the mid ’90s at a time when lawyer Willie Gary was starting to earn his reputation as the “giant killer” for his success in taking down larger corporations.
Directed by Maggie Betts, and written by Betts and Doug Wright, the film also stars Jurnee Smollett, Alan Ruck, Mamoudou Athie, Tywayne Wheatt, Bill Camp and Pamela Reed. It was filmed in New Orleans in the spring of 2022, and has been praised by critics as being a refreshing court room drama that has audiences rooting for the underdog the whole way through.
