Looking back at Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ relationship

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas started dating in October 2016 after Joe DM’ed the English actress on Instagram. They went “Instagram official” in January 2017 and looked to be happy together since. The couple secretly got married in Las Vegas in May 2019, then followed it up with a bigger wedding in Paris the following month. Then in 2020, their daughter Willa was born. Her younger sister Delphine joined the family in 2022. As of Oct. 13, 2023, the girls are three and one years old.

Since their relationship began and up until just a few months ago, everything seemed to be going great between the couple. Sophie took part in the Jonas Brothers “Sucker” music video with Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Danielle Jonas, has gone to multiple concerts, including The Jonas Brothers World Tour which is currently ongoing, and Joe wrote the song “Hesitate” for his love.

However it is important to remember that couples go through ups and downs. And just because we see happiness in the public, it doesn’t mean everything is rainbows and sunshine at home. I’m not saying those moments of happiness we see are fake. But all couples have good days and bad days.

Joe Jonas files for divorce from Sophie Turner

A few days before the official divorce filing, fans started to speculate that something had happened between Joe and Sophie since the singer didn’t have his wedding ring on at a few concerts while on tour. As mentioned above, on Sept. 5, 2023, Joe officially filed for divorce from his wife. He claimed the marriage between them is “irretrievably broken” in the filing.

He announced he wanted shared parental responsibilities with Sophie, a parenting plan should be established, and that both parents should “contribute to the support” of their daughters. The petition also shows that the couple have a prenup. In response, the two stars each shared the following statement on their respective Instagram accounts:

"After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

After that, Sophie made a bold statement stepping out with Joe’s ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift. As Divorcing Jonas shares, this is showing the public that Taylor supports Sophie, and everyone else should too. After all, the pop singer has massive influence. The same day, Sophie sued Joe for the “wrongful retention” of the kids. In the petition, she states that she found out about the divorce from the media, which reps for Joe denies, and that he didn’t allow their daughters to go back to England where they’ve been living since April. The filing claims he held on to their passports and refused to give them to Sophie. A rep for Joe has also disputed this.

The latest update in the courts

On Oct. 10, the couple came to an agreement regarding the custody of their kids. At the moment, the girls can “temporarily travel” between the U.S. and the U.K. until Jan. 7, 2024 two weeks at a time. In response, the two once again released a joint statement to Good Morning America. We shared it below:

"After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents."

Then a few days later on Oct. 13, news came that Joe had filed to dismiss the divorce petition in Miami. This means that the couple is choosing to deal with their separation in private, and plan to “pursue an amicable resolution of all issues,” per Page Six. Sophie filed a divorce petition in the U.K. as well. The status of it is not known at this time.
