Updated Nov. 14, 2023 – In 2022, we were introduced to a new action thriller starring Jeff Bridges! And now, we wait for The Old Man season 2 to make its debut. What’s the latest news on the next chapter of the story?

The show was developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, and is based on the 2017 book of the same name by author Thomas Perry. Here’s everything we know about the second season ahead of its release!

Has The Old Man season 2 release date been announced? (where to watch)

At this time, no release date has been announced for The Old Man season 2. And it’s very likely the series won’t even be back in 2023. Our prediction is that the production might be back sometime in early 2024.

The show got a renewal just a few days after the drama thriller first premiered. Season 1 debuted June 16, 2022, and then FX renewed the television production for a second season on June 27 that year. The writers strike (more on that below) didn’t start until May 2023. But that doesn’t mean all of the episodes for season 2 have been filmed yet. We dive more into this explanation below.

The seven-episode first season is currently streaming on Hulu. It costs $7.99/month with ads or $14.99/month without ads. Season 1 premiered with the first two episodes on FX, with one installment released weekly. We expect around seven episodes and the same release schedule to happen with season 2.

Is The Old Man season 2 affected by the strikes?

Yes, The Old Man season 2 has been affected by the writers strike and the actors strike. The writers strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) began on May 2, 2023. The actors strike by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) started on July 14, 2023. Since the show was renewed back in 2022, scripts and filming had already begun on the second season.

However on May 22, 2023, it was reported by Deadline that production on season 2 had stopped due to the writers strike. Five scripts have been written, but only four episodes have been filmed. Deadline shares that “the last remaining script needed rewrites.” An episode count hasn’t been shared yet, but it sounds like the second season might be a total of six episodes then. With four filmed, there are two left.

The good news is that as of Sept. 25, 2023, writers were able to get back to work since the writers strike has been resolved. The WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) came to an agreement. A new, three-year contract is now in effect through May 1, 2026. The only thing we don’t know at the moment is whether the writers room for The Old Man season 2 has reopened. While the writers can get back to work, think about how many productions are starting up again at the same time. Many writers rooms have opened back up, but at the moment we’re not sure if FX has done so for The Old Man.

Thankfully, the actors strike is now over as well! On Nov. 9, 2023, SAG-AFTRA announced that the guild and AMPTP have come to a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract. Members of the guild still need to vote to approve the proposal. However in the meantime, that does mean that actors and productions can get back to work. Many studios and shows are going back to filming the week of Nov. 27, 2023. It’s still not clear what the plan is for The Old Man season 2. But hopefully things get rolling once again soon!
