Bob’s Burgers: Running Down a Gene is a fun musical moment
Season 14 of Bob’s Burgers may have just started yet the series is already featuring a Gene episode.
While Gene Belcher is a fun character, he’s usually not in the spotlight. Even so, he’s a character a lot of people enjoy so it’s unclear why he doesn’t get as much love as he should. Thankfully, the show is giving him his spotlight now.
Whether you’re a fan of Gene or not, there is no denying the early stills make it seem even more fun and the episode is entitled “Running Down a Gene.” We won’t get into the plot details just yet but from what I’ve seen, I’m incredibly excited for this one.
If you haven’t watched “Running Down a Gene,” then you’ll want to skip the next part as we’re going to be talking about the plot of the episode so this is your spoiler warning!
What happened in “Running Down a Gene” on Bob’s Burgers
The episode begins with Gene waking up from a dream and being in a great mood. He had a dream about writing the perfect song but once he woke up, he forgot it. Bob suggests he talk through his dream to try and get him back in the same headspace. It doesn’t work for him while Linda shares that there’s a cricket in the apartment so she can’t sleep.
Rudy suggests that Gene do the same routine again to have the dream again and the girls decide to hunt for the cricket. Rudy’s idea doesn’t work so Gene goes to the library to find some info but Mr. Ambrose suggests trying lucid dreaming. Meanwhile, Louise and Tina make cricket traps to try and catch the cricket.
The next day, Gene falls asleep and wakes up after every dream to write it down. He realizes he found the bus from the drink with the song. He goes back into his dream and things are incredibly similar but he keeps falling into different dreams and places. Eventually, he gets back to his keyboard but nothing is working. Mr. Ambrose suggests Gene relax and he’ll do better and points the girls to the books on insects.
Gene falls back into his dream and he starts singing a song about Saturday and heating his buns in the sun. He ends up hating the song but Bob explains that sometimes it takes hard work to make good things happen. The episode ends with the girls finding the cricket, Gene writing a song he’s proud of and not submitting it so he can save it for his double album.
“Running Down a Gene” is a hilarious musical episode you can’t miss
When it comes to musical episodes, no one does it better than Bob’s Burgers. If anything, it proves just how much the series can do. In “Running Down a Gene,” the episode does double duty as the main plot follows Gene trying to remember his song. In the B plot, we’re watching as Louise and Tina team up to capture a cricket that’s loose in the house.
Honestly, I just adored some of Gene’s one-liners in the episode which were hilarious, and how committed he was to his song. While I didn’t see his plot going the way it did, I had so much fun with it. Plus it’s always a treat to hear Gene Mirman sing. Coupled with Tina and Louise doing the absolute most, “Running Down a Gene” was a really fun one.
The only disappointing factor for this week is that we didn’t get a Halloween episode. I don’t know if it was due to the strike or not, but that’s just sad. Thankfully, there’s a massive backlog of Halloween episodes to enjoy.
Bob’s Burgers airs on Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
