Fans honor Matthew Perry outside iconic Friends New York City apartment
Friends fans are showing up to honor actor Matthew Perry after his passing on Saturday, Oct. 28. The late star, who is best known for playing Chandler Bing in the long-running sitcom, was 54 at the time of his death. Understandably, the news of his passing has sent shock waves across the entertainment industry, with his former co-stars, friends, family, and fans paying tribute to the talented actor and the legacy he leaves behind.
On Sunday, fans in the New York City area braved the rainy weather and visited the iconic West Village apartment which was used for the exterior shots of Rachel and Monica’s apartment. Remember, Friends wasn’t actually filmed in Manhattan but rather on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles, so the show used the location in NYC to make it seem like they shot on location.
Fans selected spots on the street in front of the apartment at 90 Bedford Street to build a shrine for the late Perry, leaving bouquets of flowers, photos, and heartfelt signs. “The one where we all lost a friend,” one note read, while another said: “Could we BE any more upset that you are gone!” in reference to Chandler Bing’s memorable phrase.

Variety spoke to fans at the scene on Sunday, with one person named Hope Pace saying: “He was all of our friends. He was the silly friend; he was the happy friend. That’s why we say, ‘Check on your happy friends.’” Fan Emabel Gund and her husband Erol visited the location, and she told the publication:
"“I’m 58, and Matthew Perry was 54. It’s hard to lose people who are your peers. You think you’re going to grow old with them. I wish he beat the demons.”"
As of Monday morning, Perry’s cause of death has not been confirmed. It was originally reported by TMZ that the actor was found unresponsive in his jacuzzi on Saturday, and it was believed he had died from drowning. The publication later updated their report to say other sources said Perry participated in a couple of hours of pickleball that morning. Reports claim that there was no evidence of foul play.
Tributes have been pouring in for Perry all over social media as well as in person. Besides his role as Chandler in Friends, Perry was also known for movies like The Whole Nine Yards, 17 Again, and Fools Rush In, as well as shows such as Mr. Sunshine, Go On, and The Odd Couple.
Perry’s loved ones and his fans are in our hearts during this difficult time.
