Friends stars share joint statement about Matthew Perry’s death: ‘We are all utterly devastated’

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer broke their silence over the death of Friends co-star Matthew Perry in a joint statement, according to a report from PEOPLE.

TMZ reported that Perry died at his home on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, and his death remains under investigation. He was 54 years old.

According to the report, the Friends co-stars, Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, and Schwimmer,  signed the joint statement about Perry’s death and shared it with PEOPLE on Monday, Oct. 30. Via People, the statement reads:

"“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” their statement reads. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”“In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continues. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”"

Perry starred as Chandler Bing on Friends, which ran on NBC for 10 seasons and 236 episodes from 1994 to 2004. While fans of the series love the whole cast, Perry’s Chandler is one of the funniest and most beloved of the show’s characters. Fans could always count on Perry for a big laugh, and he always delivered.

The full cast of Friends reunited for Friends: The Reunion on May 27, 2021. It was the first time in years the main cast had been back together to celebrate the show.

Since TMZ reported Perry’s death on Oct. 30, the other members of the Friends cast have paid tribute to the actor. Selma Blair, Hank Azaria, Aisha Tyler, Paget Brewster, Morgan Fairchild, and Maggie Wheeler are just a few of Perry’s co-stars to who shared a message about him and their relationship on social media.

Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, and producer/director Kevin Bright have paid tribute to Perry as a performer, friend, and colleague. They ended their message with, “This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

According to PEOPLE, Perry’s cause of death has not been revealed, and the outlet reported that the authorities are awaiting the results of the toxicology report to complete the autopsy, but there’s no word on if/when that information would be released to the public.
