Dancing with the Stars(DWTS) Halloween night–officially dubbed Monster Night–was going off without a hitch until Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy’s mesmerizing contemporary routine to “Game of Survival” by Ruelle. The pair had near flawlessly executed their performance in which Val portrayed a necromancer bringing Xochitl back to life. However, at the end, as they were making their way down to the judges, it was clear something had gone wrong.

The moment occurred off camera which left viewers wondering what happened. All we knew was that Xochitl was injured in some manner as Val had to carry her bridal style over to the judges and DWTS co-host Alfonso Ribeiro so they could receive their feedback. Everyone in the room was clearly concerned, as were we at home, as no one wants to see anyone get hurt on the series. Not to mention, to sustain a show ending injury in the competition after such a spooktacular triumph on the dance floor would have been disheartening.

As the judges checked in on her, Xochitl stated she was fine even though she was trying to keep weight off of one of her legs. Seeing her shift to accommodate her injury was more cause for concern which was clear on the judges’ faces but, ever the professional, Xochitl wanted the show to go on. Val once again carried her, this time to the sky box so they could have their post-performance interview with DWTS co-host Julianne Hough.

Julianne didn’t push for answers, but Val did lift the edge of Xochitl’s costume to show there was speckles of blood on it. And, as the DWTS family likes to do, they made her laugh during their interview by trying to freak her out since she’s easily spooked. This lightened the mood and allowed for the attention on her injury to lessen since Xochitl wanted to go on business as usual. There was, of course, worry that whatever happened would keep the starlet from continuing on in the Mosterthon dance-off, but Xochitl said it wasn’t going to stop her.

After she and Val received their score of 37 from the judges, Xochitl was ushered backstage and that’s where she hopped on Instagram to explain the incident and show her fans that she’s alright.

How did Xochitl Gomez get injured on DWTS’ Monster Night?

Entertainment Weekly reports that Xochitl shared in her Instagram Stories that she’d gotten scraped up when climbing the altar set piece for her and Val’s performance. She was bandaged and a make-up artist was concealing it with foundation so that it wouldn’t stand out during Xochitl’s performance in the dance-a-thon. According to the outlet, she captioned the story with “[t]hey fixed me up and we’ll see you for the dance marathon” before she turned the camera to say, “Dance Marathon, call me!”

The judges certainly did call! Xochitl and Val hustled and then charleston’d their way to victory, beating out their competition in the four minute dance off. They earned a total of 5 points, giving them an overall score of 42 for the night, and putting them at the top of the leader board.

It was no surprise that the two received enough votes to make it to Music Video Night next week. Xochitl’s star continues to rise on DWTS, she’s a fan favorite, and I hope she goes home with the Len Goodman Mirroball Trophy by the end of the competition.
