Was House filmed in a real hospital?

House has just hit Hulu, giving fans a new chance to check out this long-running FOX medical hit! But just where was the show actually filmed?

Premiering in 2004, House was a fantastic smash for FOX with Hugh Laurie in the title role of Gregory House, a brilliant doctor who could figure out medical mysteries baffling others. He was also an incredibly bitter, selfish, sardonic and insulting figure who had a limp thanks to a serious blood clot in his leg. Despite having no bedside manner whatsoever, House’s genius allowed him to keep on working through his addictions, helping patients.

House worked at Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey, aided by a team (including Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer and more) with Lisa Edelstein as Cuddy, the hospital administrator trying to keep a leash on House’s antics.

Thanks to the New Jersey setting, the show used some of the New York area for its cases as House handled everything from an escaped prisoner to a pregnant woman who claimed she was still a virgin. It was a great show for its eight-season run, but just where was it actually filmed?

Where was House filmed?

First of all, there is no Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, that was completely made up for the show. It could be assumed they used a real hospital somewhere in New Jersey for the location, but as it turns out, they filmed nowhere near the East Coast.

According to Latitude and Longitude Finder, the pilot for House was filmed in Vancouver, but almost the rest of the series was filmed at Century City in Los Angeles. Yes, every single hospital scene on the show is a soundstage and that includes a few other interior sets.

Occasionally, the show would use Princeton to stand in for exteriors and some school-set scenes. Areas like Koreatown were also used to stand in for New Jersey locales. So, as fun as House can be, when you watch it, be aware none of this was filmed in either New Jersey or a real hospital but clearly used soundstages for the illusion.
