Arranged marriage, spies, and more! Everything we know about Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Prime Video

Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is such an iconic movie! The 2005 fan-favorite film grossed $487.3 million worldwide, and is still a popular watch to this day. Well, we’re getting another version of the story in the new series of the same name on Prime Video!

Actor Donald Glover serves as co-creator and executive producer alongside Francesca Sloane, who is also the showrunner on the project. They are joined by Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, and Jenny Robins in executive producing duties. Here’s all we know about the upcoming Mr. and Mrs. Smith series!

Mr. and Mrs. Smith release date announced!

An official release date has been announced! Mr. and Mrs. Smith premieres Friday, Feb. 2, 2024 on Prime Video. All eight episodes of the series will be released on premiere day. Binge-watchers, prepare! The official teaser and trailer are here as well, featuring action, the obvious onscreen chemistry between Glover and Erskine, and everything else in between. Previously in July 2023, the streamer shared a “Prime Day 2023″ video teasing the release dates of their returning and new projects. One of them was Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with a November 2023 release date expected. However the streamer decided to delay it.

And that wasn’t the first time. Initially, the spy comedy was supposed to be released in 2022 but was pushed a year. Then we got the November 2023 release window, which was also delayed. In September, Prime Video shared we can expect an early 2024 release date, and now we’re finally getting it.

It’s not really known why the spy comedy got delayed both in 2022 and a year later. While the production wrapped and the episodes are ready to go, it might be possible that Mr. and Mrs. Smith‘s November 2023 release date was pushed due to the actors strike. Because during that time, lead actors Donald Glover and Maya Erskine wouldn’t have been able to do interviews or promote the new series in any way. But now since the strike is over, they can!

What is the show about? (How to watch)

Back in July 2023, Rotten Tomatoes shared a first-look clip on X. You can tell the couple is newly married and already has their hands full with the upcoming action. We're certainly in for an adventure! The description of the show gives us more insight into what we can expect. We shared the official synopses provided by Prime Video below:

"Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Taking on the lead role is Donald Glover, who will be our Mr. Smith. The talent is an actor, comedian, rapper, writer, director, and producer. He certainly does it all! He got his foot in the door in the industry as a writer on NBC sitcom 30 Rock. But, it wasn’t until his breakout role as Troy Barnes in the network’s Community that the actor gained fame. He also created, starred in, and directed some episodes of FX series Atlanta. The personality has also focused on his rapping career, having released four albums. We shared who’s joining him below:

Why did Phoebe Waller-Bridge leave Mr. and Mrs. Smith?

Originally, the role of Jane Smith was supposed to be played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The actress also served as a co-creator of the series. Though in September 2021, it was announced that Bridge was exiting the series due to having a “different creative vision for the series,” per The Hollywood Reporter. According to the outlet, Glover and Waller-Bridge are still friends (they are former co-stars from Solo: A Star Wars Story). And so, that’s when PEN15 actress Maya Erskine came in.

Are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series?

You never know when actors make surprise cameos in a show or movie. But as of right now, there’s been no announcement stating Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt will appear in the series. That would certainly be a welcome surprise!

Where to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie

The 2005 movie is currently streaming on Prime Video and Starz. It's convenient that both the film and series are on the same platform. Prime Video is already included in your Amazon Prime shopping plan if you have it, otherwise it costs $8.99/month for the streamer. Starz is $10/month.

There are also many services where you can rent or buy the film. Those include YouTube, Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV, and Google Play Movies & TV. The production is available to rent for $3.99 or buy for $14.99 on all five.

The film certainly had an interesting story concept! The production followed married couple John and Jane Smith who are both assassins working for competing agencies. They’re surprised to find this out, and have a dilemma. They’ve been assigned to kill each other.
