If you haven’t already heard, Hulu’s latest psychological mystery-thriller series, A Murder at the End of the World, is sure to keep you on your toes! It looks to be a terrific addition to FX on Hulu’s slate. The show was originally set to debut on Aug. 29, 2023, but due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, it had to be pushed back. Since its premiere on Nov. 14, the streamer has put out its second episode, with many more to come.
The original series was created by screenwriter and actress Brit Marling (The OA), and director/screenwriter Zal Batmanglij (The OA) for FX. The basis for the series’ premise stemmed from Marling and Batmangli’s interests in exploring stories about amateur sleuths and young female detectives.
The show stars Emma Corrin as Darby Hart, a young detective and hacker that’s invited over to a hotel in a remote location and embroiled in a murder mystery. The rest of the cast includes Brit Marling as Lee Andersen, Harris Dickinson as Bill Farrah, Alice Braga as Sian, Joan Chen as Lu Mei, Raúl Esparza as David, and Jermaine Fowler as Martin.

A Murder at the End of the World began principal photography in Feb. 2022. According Variety, The series was shot in Iceland due to low COVID rates at the time. When the show was originally called “Retreat”, Marling shared photos from shooting in various areas, seemingly confirming that that the cast and crew had been in Iceland and the shooting had wrapped in Sep. 2022. She also confirmed on her own Instagram that she had “scaled up a hillside to take this pic of our crew on our first scout – the glacier of SVÍNAFELLSJÖKULL.”
Other parts of the series were shot in the United States, specifically in the states of New Jersey and Utah. Multiple scenes from the series are confirmed to have been shot in the Reddington, New Jersey area, you’ll recognize that parts of the early episodes featured the town’s Readington River Buffalo Farm.
