To give us a deeper look into the chilling new season, the streamer has released the official trailer! The video reveals just how much Swiss-Italian surgeon and medical researcher Paolo Macchiarini’s (Ramírez) patients trust him, how he’s part of what seems to be “groundbreaking work,” the chemistry between Ramírez and Moore, and how Benita Alexander (Moore) begins to suspect the doctor is doing things he shouldn’t be doing. Check it out below:
The second season of the true-crime anthology is centered around real-life the real-life Paolo Macchiarini (Ramírez), aka the “Miracle Man,” per the synopsis. The surgeon is known for his “innovative operations,” but are those operations ethical? If we know anything about this show, the answer is, no. The real-life figure was known for research fraud, manipulative behavior, and performing experimental surgeries.
In Dr. Death season 2, we’re going to see investigative journalist Benita Alexander (Moore) spends more time with Paolo as she’s doing a story on him. But things go from professional to personal, “changing her life forever.” And soon, she’ll learn that the man she’s with will go to far lengths to “protect his secrets.” At the same time, doctors from “halfway across the world” will find out that the beloved doctor definitely has something to hide.
If you’re curious about the real-life figure, Peacock will also release a 90-minute companion documentary, Dr. Death: Cutthroat Conman on premiere day. Any time a show or movie is based on a true story, I’m always wondering how the real events went down. So I think Peacock producing the documentary is very smart on their end, and it’s definitely appreciated by me as a viewer!
The anthology series is based on the Wondery Podcast. The third season of the podcast covers Paolo Macchiarini’s story, while the first season covers Dr. Christopher Duntsch, who was the focus of Dr. Death season 1 on Peacock. Duntsch is known for malpractice, which resulted in the maiming of 38 patients. In 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison.
Dr. Death season 2 premieres with all eight episodes Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 on Peacock.
