The writing was on the wall, Bob Hearts Abishola ends with season 5 (Finale date announced)
By Sabrina Reed
Not only will we be saying goodbye to Young Sheldon, S.W.A.T., and Blue Bloods in 2024 but it’s also been announced that the comedy series Bob Hearts Abishola is ending as well. While we fully admit the writing was on the wall considering the main cast was reduced down to leads Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku with the remainder of the ensemble recurring for season 5, it’s still sad news.
The series got its start in September 2019, introducing viewers to the unlikely love story between Bob Wheeler and Abishola Adebambo. They met when Bob landed in the hospital due to a heart attack brought on from work stress. Abishola was his attending nurse and he was drawn to her kindness. Determined to get her to give him a chance, Bob pursued Abishola and opened the door to a romance that brought their two different worlds together in beautiful and hilarious ways.
In the season 4 finale, Abishola receives her acceptance letter to John Hopkins as such she and Bob are expected to be moving to Baltimore in the fifth and final season. Bob Hearts Abishola‘s farewell run will premiere on Monday, Feb. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET. It’ll have a 13 episode season. The series finale is scheduled May 13.
Before the Hollywood strikes, the recurring cast were guaranteed a five episode minimum. Presumably that will still hold despite the delay in season 5’s bow. This affects the following cast members:
- Christine Ebersole as Dottie
- Matt Jones as Douglas
- Maribeth Monroe as Christina
- Vernee Watson as Gloria
- Shola Adewusi as Auntie Olu
- Barry Shabaka Henley as Uncle Tunde
- Travis Wolfe Jr. as Dele
- Bayo Akinfemi as Goodwin
- Anthony Okungbowa as Kofo
- Saidah Arrika Ekulona as Ebunoluwa
- Series co-creater Gina Yashere as Kemi
Bob Hearts Abishola series co-creator Chuck Lorre, as reported by TVLine, spoke to season 5 not being the planned end for the comedy on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast.
"“I think there are so many more stories to tell. The initial motivation for that [show] was a romance wrapped around a story of immigrants who make America great — that extraordinary, courageous effort that is made by millions of people every year who find their way in this country. I don’t necessarily feel like we were done, but that was not my call.”"
He, however, remains grateful for the show’s run and expressed “[f]ive years has been terrific.”
