Boston Blue thrives because of its characters. The show's fearless leader, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), has been a staple of the Blue Bloods world for over 15 years. Further, the addition of the Silver family has only expanded Boston Blue's incredible ability to drive the narrative through its characters. This includes the show's supporting characters.
Usually, a show's series regulars get most of the spotlight, and for good reason. However, supporting characters are just as important to a show's success. The writers of Boston Blue recognize this, as they've cultivated a strong cast of supporting actors who made season 1 what it was.
Here of three of those characters that we'd love to see return for season 2.
3. Chris Williams
In season 1, Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) learned the truth about her biological father, Chris (Erik King). Mae confessed that Chris had known that he had a daughter all along, but she forced him to stay away from Lena because of his sketchy past and prison stint. Lena eventually tracked her father down, and the two were on their way to a relationship by the season 1 finale.
Erik King was the perfect choice to play the mysterious, guilt-ridden character Chris Williams. He brings a measure of silent strength and fierce resolve to the characters he plays, which is necessary to portray such a complex character.
We will likely see the actor in season 2, as Chris and Lena have only just begun to explore their relationship. There will surely be some bumps along the way, as the two work to repair the past and move forward. But we are excited to see where the characters will go next.
2. Penelope 'Penny' Bravo
In season 1, episode 6, titled "Code of Ethics," due to a case of mistaken identity, Sean ended up meeting a girl named Penny during an investigation. The misunderstanding initially creates tension, but the two eventually realize they have feelings for each other and start dating.
Penny and Sean are complete opposites. Penny is bold and outspoken. When she sees something she wants, she goes for it. But Sean is still figuring himself out and learning how to be a man. As a result, the two balance each other out. They reek of young love in the best way possible. It would be nice to see where their relationship can go and whether they ultimately have a future together.
1. Detective Brian Rodgers
Season 1 ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving viewers wondering whether Detective Rodgers (Ryan Broussard) had survived being hit by a car. The accident couldn't have come at a worse time. Lena is still recovering from being shot while also trying to navigate her new relationship with her father. And the couple had just committed to staying together after Brian decided to turn down his new job offer with the DEA.
It would be nice to see Brian return for season 2, alive and well. He and Lena have a lot of potential, and it would be sad to see that snuffed out by a tragic accident. It's also nice to see Ryan Broussard on our screens again following the cancellation of FOX's Alert: Missing Persons Unit. He's a great addition to any cast.
