Matlock is a fresh take on an old classic. The show stars the legendary Kathy Bates as Madeline Kingston, also known as Matty Matlock. She goes undercover at the high-powered law firm, Jacobson Moore, to investigate their cover-up of documents that could have prevented her daughter's drug overdose. Along the way, Matty rediscovers her love for the law and forms a close friendship with her boss, Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall).
Since premiering in 2024, Matlock has cultivated a dedicated fanbase that tunes in every week to watch Matty Matlock take on bad guys. As a result, it wasn't a surprise when the show was renewed for season 3. However, Matlock won't return until 2027, leaving fans with some time on their hands.
To pass the time, we recommend watching one of these three shows!
3. Cupertino
Cupertino follows Michael Price (Mike Colter) and Olivia Siffre (Rachel Keller), two scrappy lawyers who decide to take on powerful tech giants on behalf of the "little guy." The show, created by powerhouse duo Robert and Michelle King, recently premiered on CBS as part of their fall TV lineup.
Both Matlock and Cupertino show brilliant lawyers taking on industry giants. For Matty, it's personal. She witnessed firsthand how powerful people can wield their influence to do destructive things. Price and Siffre are ambitious. They too know what it's like to be strong-armed by a big law firm, but that's not their main motivation. They both want to make names for themselves and feel taking on tech giants is the way to do so.
If you dislike bullies, you'll love Cupertino. Each week, they take on cases where powerful people think they can get away with bullying the powerless. Not to mention, the weekly topics are extremely relevant to our modern, tech-focused landscape.
Cupertino airs every Thursday at 10/9c on CBS.
2. The Lincoln Lawyer
The Lincoln Lawyer follows Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a charming attorney who takes on big and small cases in Los Angeles. Along the way, he often struggles to balance his professional career with his personal life.
A big reason Matlock works so well is because of Kathy Bates. She brings an effortless charm to the titular character that reels audiences in and keeps them coming back for more. The same is true of Garcia-Rulfo. The actor has an almost seductive quality that complements the role well.
The Lincoln Lawyer is available to stream on Netflix.
1. Columbo
This one is a throwback! Columbo followed Los Angeles homicide detective Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk) as he solved some of the city's toughest crimes. The show had a whopping ten seasons that aired from 1971 to 1998.
Like Matlock, Columbo used his unassuming demeanor to leverage suspects. Most people underestimated him because of his appearance and, later, his age. As a result, he successfully manipulated situations to uncover the truth and solve cases. Society saw it as a weakness, but he used it as a tool.
Columbo is available to stream on Tubi.
