One thing we love about Will Trent is its quirkiness. The show is unique in that it usually balances dark, gritty drama with fun comedic moments. However, season 4 leaned more heavily into the darkness than the light.
If I had to use one word to describe season 4, it would be loss. Each character had their own personal loss: Will battled his internal demons, Faith experienced a traumatic breakup, and Ormewood struggled to manage his health issues. Several major characters were also killed off in truly jaw-dropping fashion.
Here are three of those actor exits that shocked fans the most.
3. Greg Germann
In season one, Will learned that his mother had been kidnapped by serial killer James Ulster, portrayed by former Grey's Anatomy actor Greg Germann. She subsequently died in captivity after giving birth to Will, making Ulster responsible for her death. As a result, Will developed a deep-seated hatred for Ulster that boiled over in season 4.
Ulster was fatally shot in season 4, episode 2, titled "Love Takes Time," after being kidnapped by his former fiancee. The moment was shocking mostly because it felt like the writers were never actually going to kill the character. They drew his story over several seasons, and Ulster was always a thorn in Will's side. However, that may finally be coming to an end. At least I hope so.
2. Scott Foley
Will and Angie have been caught in an endless cycle since the beginning of the show, so it was nice when the writers finally broke that cycle by giving Angie a stable love interest. Dr. Seth was good for her. He was patient, kind, and understanding of all the trauma Angie had experienced in her life. They also created a beautiful baby together.
That's what made Scott Foley's exit so shocking.
Seth died in Will Trent's season 4 finale after being involved in a T-bone accident while rushing Angie to the hospital for the birth of their baby. As a result, he never got to meet his daughter, and Angie is now a widow, much to the shock and disappointment of fans.
It felt like Foley was starting to plant some roots on the show. He had great chemistry with Erika Christensen, and his character meshed well with the rest of the cast. It also made sense for his character to be involved in GBI cases, given his job description. But, alas, it was not meant to be.
1. Sonja Sohn
The most shocking death of the season came in season 4, episode 15, titled "The Blank Expense of Nothing," when Amanda was murdered by Adelaide, daughter of serial killer James Ulster.
No one expected Will Trent to kill off its matriarch. Sonja Sohn had been a permanent fixture on the show since the beginning. As a TV veteran, she brought a measure of experience and focus that the show needed to get off the ground. One of Will Trent's biggest strengths has always been its cast, and Sohn was an important part of that.
Getting rid of Amanda Wagner was a mistake, a big one. The consequences of that decision will most likely reverberate for years to come, or for as long as the show lasts. Sohn was more than a series regular; she was a hallmark of the show. Unfortunately, she wasn't treated as such.
