911: Lone Star just pulled off a surprise wedding that amazed viewers! How'd they do it?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for 911: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 10
As 911: Lone Star moved into its final three episodes, we focused on the team, especially Judd, who was not doing well with his sobriety. He was losing faith with his wife Grace gone and close to hitting bottom but thankfully pulled out of it.
The other focus of the latest episode was Marjan (Natacha Karam) bringing her boyfriend Joe (played by Karam's real-life boyfriend John Clarence Stewart) to meet her parents. It was a tense meeting as they weren't happy about the idea of the pair living in a small apartment and Joe taking care of any kids with Marjan not quite having his back.
Would Marjan's parents support marriage in 911: Lone Star?
It touched on Marjan's wanting to honor her parents and the rescue of a woman who kept doing whatever her sister wanted weighed on her. Marjan stood up to her parents to tell them she loved Joe and wanted to be with him no matter what. To her surprise, her parents said they also liked Joe and just wanted their daughter to be happy.
That led to a huge moment as rather than just an engagement, Joe and Marjan were married in the station house with the 126 and family in attendance. Speaking to TVLine, Karam noted that it was a surprise, but it fit the show.
"Come on, this is Lone Star. We always have to be larger than life. Usually it's with big, scary things, but sometimes it's with really lovely things like this. Lebanese people are known for having extravagant weddings, and with Marjan already being so over the top, I wanted to make sure that this wedding matched her level."
Karam admitted that she wishes there had been more episodes to build to it, but with 911: Lone Star's final season cut to 12, they had to push it. Yet it still connected well for a great payoff.
More on the surprise wedding and dress
Karam praised the show's designers for putting together Marjan's gorgeous wedding dress. A big line has it mentioned that she ordered it just a month after meeting Joe, showing that she knew he was the one.
"There had to be a way for the audience to understand why and how this came together so quickly. We had more drawn-out versions, paragraphs of them, but [co-showrunner Rashad Raisani] and the writers did what they do well, making it much more concise. Now we know that she's been clear as day about this man from the moment she met him. The audience can be all in for her, because they know she's all in."
Karam also noted how accurate the wedding was down to using a traditional knife to slice the wedding cake and the emotional honeymoon where Marjan removes her headdress to be with her new husband. It was a beautiful moment which Karam thinks shows how well Marjan has grown. "Ultimately, it was all about seeing and being seen for the first time in that way. It was important for that scene to feel delicate, vulnerable, safe and intimate."
While viewers may have been as caught off guard as the characters at these unexpected nuptials, it's a great way to wrap up Marjan's story on 911: Lone Star and a highlight of the series final year.
911: Lone Star Season 5 airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.
