Between 911 and 911: Nashville, ABC has been keeping us well fed with dramatic plot twists aplenty in the first responder franchise's universe. The new spinoff's first season accomplished even more impressive storytelling than most series knock out in five seasons, but it's clear that the series is just getting started. 911: Nashville season 2 has lots of surprises in store after that shocking conclusion.

In the 911: Nashville season 1 finale, Ryan and Sam's check-up on their baby reveals an unexpected and potentially cancerous and life-threatening tumor growing on one of Sam's ovaries. She's presented with the option of having surgery, which could put the baby's life at risk, or undergoing treatments after giving birth, which could put her life at risk. Sam chooses the latter option, though Ryan disagrees with her decision—and this is before conferring with either of their families.

911: Nashville season 2 will also settle the ongoing and likely never-ending feud between Blythe and Dixie, which finally came to physical blows in the season 1 finale. Their confrontation has been a long time coming, and we haven't even seen its culmination. After the latest tease about the second season's new twist, it's possible we might not see their fight in full after all.

911: Nashville season 2 will begin with a time jump

If you were hoping to catch up with the characters in real time in 911: Nashville season 2, continuing to see Blythe and Dixie's battle and Ryan and Sam's decision about their baby, you're going to be disappointed about this new update from showrunner Rashad Raisani. While chatting with TV Insider after the season 1 finale, the show's boss revealed there will be a time jump.

Here's how Raisani explained what's to come with the time jump in season 2:

"The fight actually went on much longer in the way we shot it, but I just thought it was more shocking and compelling to just cut it off at a moment of explosion and not play it all the way through this sort of big, choreographed fight. What I can say is that we will pay it off in season 2, but we may make the audience wonder a little bit for a while about exactly what happened, how injured everybody was, and what happened after. So, we’ll do a very small time jump in season 2, but allow people to kind of wonder and then answer the question about what happened."

The premiere episode of season 2 will have a "small time jump," which means we shouldn't expect months or even a year to have elapse when we catch back up with the 911: Nashville crew. Raisani didn't confirm how long the time jump would be, but we should expect a few weeks or a month, give or take, to separate the storytelling from the big fight to where season 2 begins.

Based on Raisani's tease, 911: Nashville season 2 will kick off and keep use guessing on what actually went down in Blythe and Dixie's fight. Now, we're not expecting either of them to have killed the other, but we wouldn't put it past a show like this to lead us to believe that someone had died before slowly putting the pieces together of the time we missed in the slight flash forward.

The time jump also means there could have been a cool down between Ryan and Sam. Because time has passed since they learned about Sam's tumor and she made her decision about treatment, the couple have had time to live with it and talk with their families. They could still be at odds with each other while moving forward with Sam's wishes, but additional details of her condition could also arise.

We didn't expect 911: Nashville season 2 to open with a time jump twist, but as we think about the opportunities this presents the storytelling moving forward. And don't forget, we also have the promise of Ryan Phillippe's new character joining the team, and he's surely going to mix things up in ways we couldn't even imagine.
