We're back for another wild season of 911, and season 10 isn't veering away from the show's proven track record of kicking off with bang. While we still have some loose ends to cover from the season 9 finale, like new career paths and Buck's bold step forward toward fatherhood, we're joining the 118 for their latest season-opening disaster: A volcano eruption in Los Angeles (supposedly).
911 season 10 episode 1 begins on a tour bus in Hollywood as a family prepares to go to the beach after seeing the tour, but there's a lot of traffic. Suddenly, we're in a car with an older student drive and his instructor, then a self-driving car with a businessman, and then an actress learning her lines. Each of these people are distracted and in the midst of conflict.
The 118 starts season 10 battling a sinkhole
All three cars nearly crash into the tour bus before they all come to a standstill. Before long, the highway opens up and crumbles, sinking below ground. The 118 arrive on the scene at the sight of the sinkhole, but it grows bigger and nearly takes Chimney with it. The team safely descends into the sinkhole and begins extracting survivors and working on victims.
The older student driver's ICD won't stop defibrilating, and as if there weren't enough problems, a powerline falls right into the tour bus. Buck and Ravi try to save the father who wants to move to LA, who's trapped and admitting to his daughter that he lost his job. Hen stops the man's ICD, but the extraction gets jammed despite the critical time crunch. Harry jumpes off to stop the jam.
Underwater, Harry finds the actress trapped inside her car with little breathing room. Eddie recusitates the older man then dives underwater to save the actress, who has since passed out. But she's quickly revived, and the 118 officially saved everyone. As the team prepares to leave, the water in the sinkhole bubbles. Can you believe we haven't even gotten to the lava yet?

Another call involving water points to further problems
Maddie attends a meeting with the city's teams that lead public safety, and she cuts in to mention that there actually was a warning sign. While looking through the briefing, she noticed an increase in 911 calls near the area of the sinkhole. She's tasked with listening to all the calls to check for trends. Eddie meets Buck at the hospital after Theo calls him. Buck broke his nose.
Apparently, Buck's been to the ER with non-work-related injuring multiple times. He tells Eddie the truth that Theo hit him while wrestling. Eddie witnesses Buck's parenting strategies, and he doesn't like what he sees. Athena visits May at work and they both share stories from their new work as a detective and nurse respectively. Athena's struggling with being a rookie again.
When they walk outside, they watch a white van push an unconscious man to the ground and drive away. Athena and Detective Newell observe their John Doe while they wait for a full report. He had a diamond ring on him, which gives them something to go on. Athena asks Newell to take on the case, and despite his reservations, he allows her to take the case.
During a show at the aquarium, the scuba diver everyone's looking at begins to freak out in the water. He's pull to the floor after complaining that something burns. The 118 quickly realizes something is turning the water in the tank into acid. It's a race against the clock now that the diver has stopped breathing. Buck uses a a long pole to hook the diver and pull him to the surface.
The team cuts his suit off and finds chemical burns all over his skin. Hen has to cut into his neck to place a tube to help him start breathing. Finally, he wakes up and starts breathing. There's still an unexplained circumstance causing problems with the water.

Buck and Eddie face parenting conflict
Athena and Newell try to find the driver of the van and identify their John Doe. The man at the work site they're speaking to recognizes him as Corbin, one of his workers. Athena notices a man with a bandage on his hand. When she asks to speak with him, he runs away. Thankfully, Newell catches him before he makes it out the door. Athena grabs another man with burns on his neck.
Buck and Theo have dinner with Eddie and Christopher. It's clear that Buck isn't doing a great job giving Theo boundaries and consequences as he tears through Eddie's house making a mess. He kicks a basketball, which rolls into the room and causes Christopher to fall. Theo apologizes, but Eddie's obviously upset with Buck. Meanwhile, Athena's time celebrates her win.
Apparently, it was a construction accident after drinking on the site. But Athena receives a phone call from the hospital that Corbin died. She feels like she hasn't completed the case by finding his next of kin and who the ring belongs to. Maddie continue sort through all of the 911 calls and pieces together weird occurrences. Chimney mentions maybe there's something with the water.
Welcome to Lava Land
Maddie puts in a call to the director convinced that something bigger could happen in Los Angeles given the patterns in the 911 calls. Athena pored over evidences and security footage all night. She spoke to the coroner about Corbin's blisters and burns and found inconsistencies with the story that closed the case. Newell's happy to keep the case closed, but Athena's not.
The director calls Maddie from the sinkhole, which is screaming. Athena drops by the jewelry store from the security footage. The owner kept everything in the vault while on vacation. She shows him the ring, which he confirms was stolen from the vault. When he opens the vault, it's empty. Athena ventures down the ladder and into the dark hole that leads underground.
Maddie leads the charge for the evacuation for the are near the sinkhole, which is continuing to grow. The 118 ends up on the scene to figure out what's going on and assist with evacuations. As the worry mounts that the problem with sinkhole is deeper underground, that's where Athena is investigating. The ground begins shaking, sending Athena down. An eruption of lava fills the sky. Welcome to Lava Land!
911 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on Hulu and next-day on Hulu.
