When 911 season 9 premieres, Buck will have a new love in his life: his son.
According to 911 showrunner Tim Minear via TVLine, season 9's biggest love story will be between Buck and his foster son Theo. However, Minear revealed that their relationship won't be without its challenges, specifically Buck "believing he has the right to be someone's father."
To recap, Buck and Theo's journey began in season 6 when Buck agreed to donate his sperm to a friend from college. The friend, Connor, and his wife, Kameron, used the sperm to create an embryo that eventually became Theo. However, in season 8, the couple was involved in a horrific car crash that claimed their lives. As a result, Theo was left without family and placed into the foster care system. That is, until Buck intervened.
At the end of season 9, Buck completed the paperwork necessary to foster Theo, and the child came to live with him. While the decision may have come as a surprise to some fans, it makes sense given Buck's characterization.
Buck has grown exponentially over the years. For example, within the last couple of seasons, he finally started living true to himself and his feelings. This has not only helped him make better decisions but also impacted the people around him. Moreover, Buck has experience mentoring the other children in his life. He's practically a second father to Christopher. The two have been bonded since season 2's tsunami, and Buck has consistently shown how much he cares for Eddie's son. More recently, he helped Harry become a firefighter, taking him through drills and encouraging him to pursue his dreams. Therefore, it's not a question of whether Buck will make a great father, but what the journey to fatherhood will look like for him.
Theo is young, but losing his parents will still be an adjustment. Children need stability, and Theo is in one of the most unstable situations imaginable. Buck will no doubt provide a good home for Theo, but he hasn't officially adopted him yet. 911 loves drama, so there could come a time when Theo's fostership is in question. A random relative might even come out of the woodwork to stake their claim to his guardianship.
With all the uncertainty, Buck's village will play an important role in his success as a foster parent. They've seen him grow over the years and know Buck's heart for people. It's important that rather than doubting him, they encourage him to believe in himself. Self-doubt has always been something that Buck has struggled with internally. Therefore, the 118 fam needs to come together and rally behind him. You can't do life alone, and we hope the writers of 9-1-1 remember that as we move into season 10.
