911 showrunner Tim Minear confirmed the big emergency for the 911 season 10 opener, and luckily, it’s on Earth this time. Fans have been speculating all summer about what could possibly happen and now we know a sinkhole is the latest emergency the firefighters of the 118 will tackle.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Minear talked about having an idea for a sinkhole, only to find out afterward that a huge sinkhole opened in Los Angeles. He said, “This is maybe the first time that we were in prep on something and the world beat us to it.”

It was not uncommon for the show to depict an emergency that would later occur in real life. However, one difference from the real-life West Hollywood sinkhole will be that there is apparently a volcano that will also appear. Just like earlier episodes, his inspiration for the script came from the 1997 film, Volcano.

Season 10 will bring a lot of changes for the first responders of the long-running show. Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant is now a detective, and this will allow the show to have her more involved with something going on with the 118.

Minear said that beforehand, he usually had to find a reason to justify where she was added on to a case. But “Now she’s justified because she’s carrying that badge on her belt,” he said in the interview.

The article also included some new photos from the season 10 premiere, with one showing Ryan Guzman’s Eddie Diaz supporting his friend, Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), while speaking with a doctor.

Buck’s storyline this season will revolve around his newfound parenthood. His struggles this season will see him wondering if he’s capable of being a father to anyone, including his own biological son who he is fostering. Minear said everyone at the 118, from his sister Maddie Han to his colleagues and friends, will be “there to support and encourage him.”

In other words, there are plenty of things to look forward to when the show comes back. Minear even hinted at a mini crossover with 911: Nashville that will mainly play out on the spinoff show and may involve their own emergency involving bees, based on a teaser photo on the 911: Nashville Instagram page.

There are so many possible storylines that will take place for season 10, but for now, we’ll just be happy if the big emergency does not take too many episodes this time.

911 season 10 premieres on ABC on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 8/7c.
