Abbott Elementary's latest Halloween episode opens with Mr. Johnson, Barbara, and Melissa entering the teachers' lounge dressed in their Halloween costumes. (They are dressed as a man with abs (?), a cheesecake factory, and Jessie from Toy Story, respectively.)

Mr. Johnson asks why Love Island doesn't have a special program for seniors called "Golden Love Island." Barbara reminds Mr. Johnson that he's happily partnered with his fellow janitor, Ms. Carol. But he says the program wouldn't be for him: it would be for Barbara, because she deserves love too.

Huh?

Melissa then notices a man standing in the corner holding a newspaper in front of his face. She "assumes" that it's the new substitute teacher, so she and Barbara introduce themselves. But the person is acting suspiciously, so they tear the newspaper away to reveal two students sitting on top of each other. Apparently, they'd been trying to sneak into the teacher's lounge for a while and finally found their way in.

After the kids run along, Mr. Johnson brings up his Love Island proposal again. He says the difference between the current version of Love Island and the Golden version would be that the latter would actually show sex.

Scandalous!

Abbott Elementary celebrates Halloween

Ava and O'Shon prepare for her Halloween party. She rented a warehouse, hired a DJ, and invited her and O'Shon's "sexy friends."

Afterwards, O'Shon runs into Gregory dressed as Gerald Johanssen from Hey Arnold! O'Shon says he's saving his costume for Ava's party that night. Gregory clearly has no idea what he's talking about, but O'Shon assures him the party was planned at the last minute. He encourages Gregory to come through, and the new assistant principal agrees. But first, he has to look at rings for Janine. O'Shon says he's happy for the couple...no matter what Ava says.

That's reassuring.

Meanwhile, Jacob and Janine watch a true-crime documentary in the teachers' lounge. (They are dressed as Arnold Shortman from Hey Arnold! and Susis Charamichael from Rugrats, respectively.) Gregory comes in, and he and Jacob pose like their characters. During the confessional, they explain how five years ago, Jacob asked Gregory to do matching Halloween costumes. Gregory didn't think he'd see Jacob again, so he said sure...in five years. Jacob set a reminder to bring it up again in five years, and voila!

Jacob says he and Janine are watching the true-crime documentary as part of their Halloween plan. They're going to binge the documentaries all night until they fall asleep. But Gregory tells them Ava is throwing a party that night, and he can meet them there later. Janine agrees and says the party would be a lot more fun than her and Jacob's Halloween plan.

Sorry, Jacob!

Afterwards, Jacob asks Melissa and Barbara if they're going too. He says everyone's invited. Melissa and Barbara decide to bring their partners and make it a double date.

On the way to the party, Janine grows suspicious. She notices that Gregory's spot on the location app hasn't moved. He's at a strip mall, but there are no restaurants there, so it wouldn't make sense for him to be doing deliveries.

Meanwhile, Gregory is at the ring store to look at Janine's ring. But the store manager is acting strangely, so she makes the appointment much longer than it needs to be.

Ava's party doesn't go as planned

At the party, Ava and O'Shon are joining themselves. But Ava wants everything to be perfect and tells the DJ not to play "Thriller." Unfortunately for her, the Abbott crew shows up and acts like...themselves. Ava isn't happy, but O'Shon tries to get her to have fun.

Elsewhere, the ring store manager shows Gregory the different gems he could get for Janine. He says he already knows what he wants and tries to move her along, but she continues acting strangely. While there, Janine calls to find out what's going on, but Gregory lies and says he's still making deliveries.

The store manager then takes that time to entice Gregory to buy a different ring, but her commentary could be misconstrued as sexual. Janine overhears it and thinks Gregory might be cheating on her.

C'mon, Janine! Gregory would never.

Back at the party, Barbara and Melissa try to get their men to bond over basketball. But it's unclear if it works, so they pivot to talking to some of Ava's friends. Ava sees this and worries her colleagues are ruining the party vibes.

Later, Gregory finally arrives at the party, but the cops show up with a noise complaint from next door. They want Ava to shut the party down, but she tries to get them to arrest the Abbott crew for ruining her party. Thankfully, Chief Rob and Gerald save the day by getting the cops to back down. Apparently, they're good friends.

Afterwards, Janine and Jacob confront Gregory over his absence. Jacob and his boyfriend think Gregory's secretly a murderer, while Janine thinks he might have cheated. Gregory says he can't say where he was, and Janine walks away disappointed.

Meanwhile, Ava thinks the party is a flop, but O'Shon tries to encourage her to see the positive side. Their friends are having fun. That's all that matters. She also turns the music down so the cops don't come by with another noise complaint.

We love the growth, Ava!

Gregory finds Jacob and assures him that he's not a murderer. He tells him the real reason he can't tell Janine where he was is because of the proposal. As expected, Jacob freaks out and apologizes for suspecting Gregory. He tries to fix everything by telling Janine that Gregory was absent because he's gay. But that doesn't help, so Gregory takes over. He tells her that he's not a gay, cheating murderer and asks Janine to trust him. She agrees.

We learn during the confessional that Janine thinks Gregory is getting them a puppy.

Unfortunately, Ava spills the beans later. She blames it on Gregory, saying he should have told her earlier. Janine is disappointed about the puppy but elated about the proposal.

The episode ends with Mr. Johnson popping in the middle of the dance floor.
