Grey's Anatomy shows no signs of coming to an end anytime soon; in fact, ABC is about to expand the franchise with a brand-new spinoff set to launch in 2027!

As first reported by Deadline, ABC has ordered an untitled Grey's Anatomy spinoff for the 2026-27 TV season, which will debut as part of the network's midseason slate. The untitled spinoff will move the action from Seattle to Texas, marking the first time a Grey's Anatomy spinoff will not be set on the West Coast or in the city of Seattle. It also marks the first spinoff for the franchise since the launch of Station 19 back in 2018.

The untitled Texas-set spinoff will be set within the same world as Grey's Anatomy, with the current plan being to tie the new series to one or more characters from the original series. At the present time, it seems that Debbie Allen's Catherine Fox is expected to be used to connect the two series, which would make perfect sense given the Catherine Fox Foundation owns multiple hospitals across the country.

The new series will feature a new group of doctors, but there is also the possibility Catherine will not be the only character from the flagship series who shares a connection to the Texas hospital. Casting is expected to be announced in the coming months, but we have to wonder if perhaps any former Grey Sloan staff members could be brought back for the spinoff, such as Jesse Williams's Dr. Jackson Avery and Sarah Drew's Dr. April Kepner.

Fans have long hoped to see the pair back, with many fans campaigning for a Jackson and April spinoff, so it would be fun to see the pair working together and leading the Texas spinoff. Perhaps Catherine could tag the pair in to help turn the hospital around or take the reins after the Catherine Fox Foundation buys the hospital. The options are definitely endless, and it will be exciting to see how the spinoff ends up connecting to Grey's Anatomy.

While the on-screen connections remain to be seen, the spinoff will be co-created, written, and executive produced by Rhimes and Grey’s Anatomy showrunner/executive producer Meg Marinis, with Ellen Pompeo set to executive produce the new series.

It's unclear how many episodes the first season of the spinoff will consist of, but it's expected to be on the lower range of potentially nine episodes. What is clear is that it's expected that the spinoff will slot into Grey's Anatomy's 10 p.m. time slot on Thursday night, which suggests that Grey's Anatomy season 23 will have a shortened run that will begin in the fall and possibly wrap before the end of the year or at the top of 2027 before the spinoff replaces the flagship behind new episodes of 911 and 911: Nashville.

It's certainly exciting to see that ABC is still investing in the Grey's Anatomy franchise all these years in and looking to expand the franchise for the first time since the launch of Station 19, which ended in 2024 after seven seasons. This will be the third spinoff for the franchise, which saw its first spinoff launched in 2007 with Private Practice.
