Adam Campbell will be back with more bow ties when he makes his return to NCIS: Origins for season 3 as the young Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Campbell has made multiple appearances on NCIS: Origins as well, and now that he will be back again, this makes us wonder if he will eventually reach recurring or regular series status.
As per TVLine, Mariel Molino, who plays Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez, posted an Instagram story showing Campbell on set with actor Austin Stowell in his medical examiner jumpsuit. It was then confirmed by showrunner David J. North that he would be making an appearance.
Campbell originally began portraying the younger version of Ducky on NCIS and most recently appeared in the 500th episode. He was there to guide Director Leon Vance into the afterlife after the latter’s untimely death.
His appearance in season 3 will likely continue to help establish the close friendship with Gibbs that has been a beloved part of the NCIS world since the beginning. How does Ducky return to the series?
North teased that “he comes into a case this year in a way that he hasn’t in his previous two episodes…. He sort of just ends up popping up.”
Previously, Campbell first appeared when he was sent to see if the team needed an in-house medical examiner while also bringing a gift for Gibbs. It was a surprise for Gibbs since it had been years since they last saw each other.
In his second appearance, Ducky was called to help Dr. Temet “Tango” Tengalkat after he discovered a body in a national park and was arrested when he attempted to remove it for proper burial. This helped to establish Ducky’s relationship with another member of the original team and not just Gibbs himself.
With how differently Ducky made his previous appearances, it could be that Ducky is traveling in the area and ends up helping even when he is not in a working capacity. Even though Ducky lives in a different state than the NCIS team, this latest appearance could mean that eventually, he will become a recurring or regular cast member.
It would be great to see how Ducky officially joins Gibbs in a working capacity, and then we could see more of their bond develop through the series. However he makes his appearance, we’re looking forward to seeing more of Ducky on screen.
