The countdown to American Idol season 25 is officially on, though it seems we’re going to have to wait a little later than expected for the new season to begin.
ABC has announced that the upcoming milestone season of American Idol will premiere on Monday, February 8 at 8/7c. The episode will see returning judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie kick off the search for the next American Idol with the start of the auditions, which took place over the summer.
I won’t lie, the February return date is slightly later than expected for American Idol season 25, as ABC kicked off the show’s season last year in January. Instead, we’ll see the show return during the second week of February, which makes us wonder what that might mean for when the season will wrap up its run and whether we could see bigger waves of eliminations in the final stretch of the competition.
While it would have been great to see American Idol back in January, I’m thankful that we won’t have to wait quite as long as ABC has made us in the past. As fans will recall, there have been many years in which ABC has chosen to hold the new season of American Idol for March, so I guess maybe the February return isn’t so bad. And there is more good news.
American Idol season 25 might not officially kick off until February 8, but fans will be able to enjoy an anniversary special one week before season 25 begins! That’s right, ABC has scheduled an American Idol at 25 special to air on February 1 to kick off the celebration of the show’s milestone season.
The new special will tell the definitive story of American Idol with a look at the origins, rise, and evolution of the show through the years to celebrate the judges and artists who helped make the show into one of the most successful and influential shows in TV history. As teased by ABC, the special “will chronicle the way American Idol single-handedly catapulted unknown dreamers into full-blown superstars and, in doing so, pioneered modern event television, transformed the music industry, and ultimately impacted every corner of American pop culture.”
It’s unclear which American Idol alums might be a part of the special, but regardless of who partakes in the celebration, it’s going to be fun looking back on the show’s incredible success. We expect the celebration will carry over into the season premiere the following week and throughout the season as ABC celebrates 25 seasons of the show.
