911 fans are still reeling from the latest episode of season 9, which dropped several shocking moments ahead of the season finale!
We thought the most shocking event of the episode would be the deaths of Buck’s friends Kameron and Connor, which created a mystery of what will happen to their son, Theo, who Buck just so happens to be the biological father of, having donated his sperm to help them start their family. While still reeling from that twist, the writers threw another curveball our way when, in the final moments of the episode, Detective Hooks proves to be dirty and shoots Athena point-blank after shooting and killing the crime lord during a raid, presumably to prevent the crime lord from turning on him.
The moment left fans in panic worried about whether Angela Bassett is leaving the show after nine seasons playing Athena, a fear that is more than understandable. After all, 911 has proved it’s not afraid of killing off main characters, and fans still haven’t gotten over the death of Captain Bobby Nash from last season.
Heading into the 911 finale, fans are eager to know if Athena will pull through, and her fate was front of mind when Bassett dropped by Good Morning America for her first interview following the events of the penultimate episode of 911 season 9.
Opening the interview, the Good Morning America team tried to get Bassett to spill the tea on Athena’s fate. Understandably, Bassett couldn’t give anything away about the fate of Athena, though she did remind fans that Athena is not taken out easily.
“It remains to be seen,” Bassett remarked. “I wish I could say, but Athena’s strong.”
Calling Athena strong is quite an understatement, as she’s one of the most resilient characters to ever grace the small-screen period.
Over nine seasons of 911, Athena has faced and survived so many unimaginable challenges, from being kidnapped and brutally attacked by a serial rapist and enduring life-threatening injuries in the line of duty, to saving a passenger plane from crashing by taking control and landing the plane to literally making it back to Earth after a mission in space gone wrong. For her to be taken out by a dirty cop in this fashion would be such a disservice to one of the greatest characters TV has seen.
Hopefully, Athena will pull through this latest brush with death and live to fight another day as we cannnot imagine 911 without Athena!
Fans will find out when the 911 season 9 finale airs at 8/7c on ABC.
