As ABC's 911 gears up for a milestone season 10, one series regular is extremely excited about her character’s new wardrobe for a surprising reason.

After nine years playing Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash, Angela Bassett revealed the one thing she's looking forward to in the new season as she switches from field sergeant to detective.

In an interview with People during the Disney 2026 Upfronts, Bassett opened up about the new season and what it would mean for her character. She spoke about being excited for a change in wardrobe since the belt Athena wore was uncomfortable for her.

Describing the costume prop, which also included a radio she kept on hand, as “very weighty,” Bassett said she often would have to see a chiropractor due to the issues it caused her back. “I think I wear better clothes and maybe [a] not so flat a shoe.”

Bassett said while she didn’t know what went into being a detective, she would do some research, just like she did when she first started the series and learned what went into being a field sergeant.

The end of season 9 found Sergeant Grant critically injured after being shot by a crooked detective. After the shooting and recovering, she decided that she wanted to move up, which she had balked at previously. We saw a small tease of Athena in her new role in the Season 9 finale, wearing a leather jacket and a turtleneck rather than the sergeant uniform.

Grant loved being in the field and solving cases. However, given her age and what happened to her husband, the late LAFD Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, it has almost been a given that eventually she would make a career change. It has been hinted by multiple characters that Athena should think about being a detective, but she wasn’t ready. In the end, it was something she had to come into on her own.

We’re excited to see Bassett tackle a new exploration of Athena Grant’s character, especially since being a detective will be a major change from being in the field directly. Plus, knowing how amazing the other character costumes are, we’re excited to see how Grant’s wardrobe changes with her new position.

It’s too early to know what will happen with 911 in season 10. There have been a lot of changes for everyone involved, and in Season 9, it seemed like Athena was on the back burner. However, with this new opportunity, we will likely get to see a different perspective on her character journey, in particular.

We will keep you updated on all things 911 as more news about Season 10 comes during the summer hiatus. In the meantime, you can rewatch Season 9 on Hulu.
