CSI alum Marg Helgenberger has been added to the cast of Boston Blue for season 2.

Helgenberger will play Gwen Silver, Sarah Silver's (Maggie Lawson) estranged mother, who was previously married to Ben.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Gwen is described as a "complex yet charming woman whose temperament is not unlike the climate of her Cape Cod home—unpredictable." The character returns to Boston with a "very personal and emotional agenda" that seems to catch Sarah off guard. Gwen's arrival will add some complicated dynamics to the Silver family.

It is unclear how many episodes Helgenberger will appear in for season 2.

We don't know much about Gwen other than that she has an extremely strained relationship with Sarah.

In season 1, Sarah struggled to adjust to life as a soon-to-be stepmother to her boyfriend's daughter, Phoebe. The child had a lot of issues, and Sarah found it difficult to maintain her boundaries as an unofficial guardian. This was complicated by her tense relationship with Phoebe's biological mother, who, at one point, made plans to take her daughter to Japan after receiving a job offer there. It wasn't until Sarah revealed her own estranged relationship with her mother that she relented.

During their conversation, Sarah shared that during her parents' divorce, her mom acted incredibly selfishly. Rather than considering Sarah's feelings, Gwen only thought about her own hurt and anger. She'd even made Sarah think that Ben had forgotten her birthday to turn her against him. As a result, Sarah mentioned that she and her mom were no longer on speaking terms, explaining, "I'm an adult now, but the kid she hurt still owns that part of me."

Suffice it to say, Gwen will have a lot of work to do when she arrives in Boston. Sarah has moved on with her life; she's engaged and has a stepchild with whom she's built a nice relationship. She also already has a mother who supports and loves her. So, if Gwen truly wants to be in Sarah's life, she will need to show some sincerity. That is, unless her hidden agenda is something dark.

Sarah is a superintendent for the Boston Police Department. The job comes with immense power and influence. Gwen may want to take advantage of her daughter's position for her own gain. Sarah mentioned how selfish the woman can be, so it won't be a surprise if Gwen comes to Boston with selfish intentions.

Boston Blue season 2 premieres Oct. 9, at 10/9c on CBS.
