Brilliant Minds season 2 return date makes season 3 renewal even less likely

NBC has finally announced a return date for Brilliant Minds season 2, but the news is not good for the show's renewal odds.

After pulling Brilliant Minds from the schedule unexpectedly, NBC has finally announced a return date for the final episodes of the season – and it’s not the best news for the show’s renewal odds.

NBC has announced that Brilliant Minds season 2 will resume in late May, with the show moving to Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET beginning on May 27. The show will return with its fifteenth episode on May 27, with the remaining episodes of the season airing weekly on Wednesdays through early July.

Now, this is exciting news for fans in that we have a return date for the final episodes of season 2, and we don’t have to wait too long for the episodes to arrive. However, the return date is actually bad news for the show’s future.

A late May return seems to all but confirm NBC is not looking to renew Brilliant Minds for a third season. Slotting the show to return at the end of May puts the show’s return after the 2026 NBCUniversal upfront presentation, which is slated for May 11. This is when NBC will present its calendar for the 2026-27 television season to advertisers, which is where the complication arises.

With Brilliant Minds season 2 not returning until after the NBCUniversal upfront, NBC will likely need to make a decision on the show’s future before it even returns with new episodes. The best fans can hope for is that NBC decides to wait it out, but either way, the odds of seeing Brilliant Minds back in the fall seem highly unlikely.

There have been instances in which a show has not been renewed before a network’s upfront presentation, but the sad reality is that more often than not those shows typically do not end up scoring a renewal in the end. It’s clear by NBC’s treatment of Brilliant Minds that the network is not looking to bring the show back.

The writing was on the wall the minute NBC announced Brilliant Minds was being pulled from the schedule and would not return as planned after the Winter Olympics. It’s never a good sign when a network pulls a show from the schedule, and that’s typically the biggest indicator of a forthcoming cancellation. Pair that with NBC opting to hold the final six episodes until late May, after its other midseason series wrap, and it’s looking unlikely that the struggling medical drama will score a third season.

Fans' only hope at this point would be for a streaming network to step in and save the show, but that’s looking incredibly unlikely.

Although we’re unlikely to get a third season, the good news is that we do still have six new episodes to enjoy, and those episodes will feature some amazing guest performers. Ed Begley Jr., Anne Archer, Mamie Gummer, and Ana Ortiz are all slated to guest star in the remaining episodes, which will also shine a further light on how Wolf came to land in Hudson Oaks. Let's just hope that season 2 doesn't end with too big of a cliffhanger given that we're unlikely to get resolution to unresolved storylines.
