NBC has recently revealed its fall lineup and slate of new and returning shows. One is hoping to capitalize on the chemistry from a past series by featuring two leads from a popular political drama.
Newlyweds are set to premiere on October 23 on NBC. It stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly. Both are veteran actors of television, and Newlyweds is reuniting the couple who had great chemistry from their previous series, Madam Secretary.
The series ran on CBS for six seasons and was a ratings and critical success. It starred Leoni as a CIA analyst turned the Secretary of State. It was popular during its entire run and found new fans via Netflix.
Daly played her husband on the show. He portrayed a professor who eventually became a worker in the CIA. The two actors had amazing chemistry on the show, and the audience could tell they had a genuine connection.
So much so that the two actors began dating and were married last year. It was obvious the two worked well together, and NBC is hoping to capitalize on that chemistry and the success of the former political drama.
Many shows in the past have reunited actors in episodes of series. For example, on the Wonder Years reboot, the show starred Dulé Hill. In an episode he reunited with the West Wing costar, Bradley Whitford.
This episode was written very smartly, and the two actors comically worked well together. But sometimes if the writing is off, reuniting actors can appear as a gimmick, and Hill and Whitford only worked in one episode together.
This time NBC is hoping to get past one episode and go past the nostalgia of the past show. Leoni and Daly do work well together, and them being able to play off each other should help the series. It will be interesting if an audience buys this version, though.
Madam Secretary was a drama, and the new series is a multi-camera sitcom. The difference could be jarring for some fans. However, if they can buy that Leoni and Daly are a true couple on the series, it may do very well.
The show has just a few more months to ramp up, as promos of the series should be released soon. Based on their star power, it should last past the pilot. What will come after will depend on Leoni and Daly's already established chemistry.
