5 characters from NCIS who need to appear in NCIS: Origins

NCIS: Origins has done a great job incorporating the Gibbs we know into a world of characters we are meeting in 1991. Here are five characters from the original series who we would love to see appear.

“Blue Bayou” – As Leroy Jethro Gibbs prepares for his first Christmas without his wife and daughter, flashbacks reveal the unlikely journey that led to his first day on the job as a special agent at NIS’ Camp Pendleton office working with Mike Franks and Lala, on NCIS: ORIGINS, Monday, Dec. 16 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day

NCIS: Origins has been a great addition to the franchise by introducing us to a young Agent Gibbs (Austin Stowell) and weaving the story we already know about him while introducing us to the first team he ever worked with. So far, we have already seen one character from the original NCIS appear, despite Gibbs not coming into contact with him as of yet. Is there a chance we could meet the other characters from the series?

Logistically, it is likely we might see the younger version of some characters more than others. For example, a young Timothy McGee is likely to appear in the series due to being an Army brat whereas someone like Abby Sciuto may not be around yet due to living in New Orleans. But for others, there is always a chance they will show up, especially considering Tobias Fornell has already appeared.

While we can’t list all of the characters we would love to see appear on NCIS: Origins, here are five characters who could make appearances based on what we know about them and their backgrounds.

Diane Sterling

Diane is Gibbs’s second wife and she also was eventually married to Tobias Fornell. While we do not know the timeline of their relationship, we do know that Tobias and Diane had a daughter, Emily, in 2000 so the relationship Diane has with Gibbs could have occurred at least a couple of years past 1991.

At the moment in the show’s canon, Gibbs is still reeling from the loss of his wife Shannon and daughter, Kelly, so he wouldn’t be ready for a new relationship. But there is always a possibility depending on how well the show does that Diane will be featured.

Jenny Shepard

A controversial character due to decisions she made in regards to hunting the arms dealer she believed responsible for her father’s death, Jenny was also a pivotal relationship in Gibbs’s life. While she and Gibbs had a relationship at some point in the ‘90s, we do not know when they met. However, it would be fun to see how the Origins would play into their pre-NCIS dynamic and we could see her brought back to life in a new way.

Leon Vance

Vance was an NIS agent around the time Gibbs joined Mike Franks’s team. While Vance didn’t work out of California, he did make it to Los Angeles for a case with the Office of Special Projects. So even though there is some distance from Los Angeles to Camp Pendleton, a young Vance could always swing down if a case allows him to interact with Gibbs. Seeing a young Vance as a burgeoning NIS/NCIS field agent would be fun to see and get a feel for who he was before he became the Director. Although in the NCIS timeline, they met years later so it could be a case like Fornell where Leon’s presence is hinted at.

Timothy McGee

McGee’s father was in the Navy, meaning he would have traveled to different bases his entire life. So it is possible that one of the places his father would be stationed was Camp Pendelton. Now even though McGee had only heard stories about Gibbs back before he was a probie in season 1 of NCIS, he could have had a run-in with Gibbs where neither remembered it. Heck, he could be a kid who bumps into Gibbs, who is working on a case, and we hear one of his parents call, “Tim!” Considering how close McGee and Gibbs would eventually become, it would be such a sweet moment to see how they could have met without realizing the significance for many years.

Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard

According to a season 18 episode of NCIS, Gibbs first met his close friend in 1980 and while the two seemingly did not cross paths again until later, it would still be great to get to see the doctor on screen. Even though a season 3 episode made it seem like Ducky didn’t know about Shannon and Kelly, it’s possible that with time, Ducky didn’t know that Shannon and Gibbs had married and had a child together. Gibbs was very tight-lipped about Shannon and Kelly, so if he met up with Ducky years afterward, he likely kept it to himself.

There are so many other ways we could see former characters from NCIS appear on NCIS: Origins, however it would be too long to name them all. But these are just some of the familiar faces we could see as we grow along with Gibbs as he was in a pre-series NCIS world.

Make sure to catch up with episodes of both shows on Paramount+.
