One show has already featured several standout cameos and appearances from the series that predated it. Boston Blue is finishing out its first season. The Blue Bloods spinoff has already been renewed for a second season.
Throughout its opening campaign, the sequel series has had numerous guest stars from the original. Bridget Moynahan and Len Cariou have provided guest spots on the show. They played the sister and grandfather, respectively, of Boston Blue's lead, Danny Regan.
It is an indication that despite the show wanting to establish its own identity, it also wants to pay homage and bring in the audience of the original.
The actress played Danny's original partner on the first series. The actress Jennifer Esposito and Donnie Wahlberg (playing Danny) had great chemistry, and despite the show lasting longer than her run, she was missed during her time on the show.
That may explain why the actress and character were in the later seasons 13 and 14 for guest spots on Blue Bloods. The fans welcomed her return and again reminded them of the chemistry between the two actors.
Her character's arc on Blue Bloods was wrapped up but had room for growth. She is seen as the police chief in a small town, and someone could easily see why she may return to newer series.
The spinoff does feature the replacement to Jackie's character, Maria Baez (played by Marisa Ramirez). Before Baez became the replacement, they tried several other partners for Danny. However, they chose a very similar character to that of Jackie in Baez.
Baez and Danny are now in a committed relationship on the newest series. It does mean, though, that Jackie does not have a storyline to return. There were no romantic subplots between Jackie and Danny on Blue Bloods, and with Danny now dating, it would not involve Jackie in that regard.
However, Jennifer Esposito has experience in the character and playing other cops on shows such as NCIS and Law & Order: SVU and should be open to returning. There have not been any reports indicating if she would. If she did, it would be great for the series and fanbase of both the new and older series.
As it continues to gain its own identity, look for Boston Blue to continue to pay homage to the first series. Whether it be Tom Selleck's mustache or Jackie's sharp wit, the series should feature more returning guest stars.
