Fans of Criminal Minds: Evolution will sadly have to say goodbye to the show after season 20. Paramount+ has canceled the series after five seasons despite the show having a strong run. What do we know so far about the decision to cancel the show?

TV Insider reported that in a statement from showrunner Erica Messer, she said, “While suddenly navigating the end of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for our remarkable cast, writers, directors and crew who have poured their hearts into this show,” which sounds like it came unexpectedly.

In fact, Deadline confirmed production for the series had already been completed in early fall of 2026, so whatever was filmed is what we will see when it airs. Deadline also theorized the cost of the series may have been a factor in determining whether to continue the show on the Paramount+ streaming service.

There is no confirmation on if season 20 will have a cliffhanger; however, the past few seasons of the show have ended in ways that allowed for a proper ending for the characters. The series will return with season 20 in 2027, for what will be the final episodes of the series as a whole.

Season 20 of Criminal Minds: Evolution will be the first without Zach Gilford as Elias Voit, the serial killer who spent years tormenting the BAU before being moved to a high-security penitentiary. season 19 introduced a new serial killer who dubbed himself The Fan, and the actions that took place, led Voit to be held somewhere he could not be accessible to anyone.

We do not know what will happen in the new season yet; however, from the sounds of things, Rossi will be the focal point of the season. Messer told TV Insider that he will be “very affected by some stuff that happens early on in Season 20.” However things play out, we know the team will be there for one another.

There’s no confirmation on if the show could be shopped elsewhere so it won’t end, but for now, we’re prepared to possibly say goodbye to the BAU once again. It ended on CBS after 15 seasons before being picked up by Paramount+. Even though the show was short-lived, we have loved getting to know the new and returning members of the BAU. Hopefully we will have a satisfying ending for the characters, or as satisfying in nature as given how unexpected the cancellation was.

We will keep you updated as more information becomes available about the final season of Criminal Minds: Evolution.
