Doc season 3, episode 2 opens on quite an unexpected note, as we begin the episode with a young man flagging down a driver for help after a car accident; we jump to Michael waking up from a one-night stand. It seems Michael is trying to move on following his divorce from Nora. He's not the only one moving on, as we Peter catches wind of Jake getting back together with Rachel after clocking a few flirty messages on Jake's computer.
We move to Amy, who informs Gina that she'd had a few new memories, but these ones aren’t painful or disorienting like those she's experienced in the past. Their conversation is cut short as Ben arrives to greet them at the coffee cart. Amy congratulates him on his new position, and the conversation triggers a memory as she sees a flash of Ben asking her about doing a background on everyone at the convention. It's the first of many pieces of the puzzle that fall into place across the episode.
While Amy is happy to see Ben joining the hospital's team, Ben's arrival has ruffled many feathers, with some feeling that he's pushing out Costa. Among those who are feeling blindsided by Ben's new gig is Michael. Ben comes to see Michael and apologizes for making the move without telling him. Michael notes he doesn’t disagree with the board’s decision, but he does admit he’s lost some trust in Ben by him not being forthcoming that he was making a play for the chief of surgery role.
Word comes in about the car accident victims being brought in as Amy and Sonya prepare to treat the family. Sonya wants to assign the interns to floor work so they don’t get in the way, but Amy convinces her to give them a chance as Sonya takes Ruth and gives Amy Kyle to work with.
As the family is brought in, Amy asks the son, Theo, about what happened as the boy struggles to give her answers. Amy assures him they’ll do all they can to help his family, but he needs to tell them what happened. Theo informs Amy that his family had gone out to celebrate his sister Harper’s graduation, and after he begged his parents to let him drive, as he had just gotten his license. He tells Amy about how he never saw the deer, which led to the crash, as Amy gets a flash of her own accident. Theo informs Amy that he blacked out, and when he came to, he tried to flag down help, but hours went by before someone finally pulled over.
Sonya and Ruth begin treating Harper, who needs surgery right away. After Sonya and Ruth race out, Theo’s mom’s vitals begin to drop. Meanwhile, TJ and Ben run scans on Theo’s dad, who is in bad shape after being impaled by one of the deer’s antlers. He sends TJ off to research to assist them in the removal of the antlers as he prepares to scrub in with Dr. Fox to start working on the
Amy enters to share findings suggesting that there is more than the trauma and Ben tells her to figure it out, as medicine is her line while surgery is his as he steps away to scrub in.
Between treating patients, Sonya catches up with TJ as she expresses concerns about Costa taking a very conservative approach to Harper’s surgery and worrying it could lead to complications. As for TJ, he can't seem to find any similar cases of antlers to the chest as Sonya encourages him to trust himself and think outside the box.
As Ben begins the surgery, Amy calls the OR and informs Ben that Theo’s levels are off the chart and he needs to stop the surgery, as surgery could cost him his life. She makes it clear they have to fix the heart failure first, as the surgery can kill him. Ben agrees to pause surgery, but he makes it clear that she only has a few hours. Meanwhile, Theo's mom finally comes to, and Michael explains to her that she has a bleed around her brain. Theo enters the room excited to see his mom has woken up, but to his surprise she doesn't recognize him.
Later, Ruth informs Theo that his sister should be waking up soon as he questions why his mom doesn’t remember him. She informs him they’ve ordered a CT scan to check her brain, and she stumbles through, assuring Theo that they’re doing everything they can for his father as well. Amy comes in to pull Theo away from Harper’s bed as he asks about his mom, and Amy shows him to the waiting room as she didn’t want him to see his father, who is rolled in.
Jake arrives for a consult as Kyle attempts to step in to help; Amy cuts him off and tells him to step back. He's not the only one called in for a consult, as Gina is brought in to consult on Theo's mom, whose case is getting complicated as her scans show her hematoma is getting smaller, so they order more tests to see what could be causing the memory loss.
As Amy works to find a solution, Ben pays Michael a visit and informs him that Amy ordered him to stop mid-surgery, and the longer she delays surgery, the higher the risk of fatality. He makes it clear Michael should step in to make something happen, so Michael goes to check in with Amy, who is doing everything she can. Michael asks if there is something between Amy and Ben he should know about as she gets a flashback to Ben and her having dinner—more on that flashback shortly.
After being sent away, Kyle is doubting himself as he thought he was making progress, but now he’s not sure what happened for Amy to cast him aside. Liz encourages him to focus on managing what he can control and not worry about Amy, noting how this case might have dragged up some trauma for Amy given her own accident.
Gina worries it’s a stroke and begins medication as Michael goes to give Theo an update and finds him getting off the phone with a lawyer. Theo begins pushing back about how the hospital sent a social worker to him and is getting ahead of himself, worried about losing his parents and then being put into the system and losing his sister. Michael assures him they're doing everything to save his parents, but it's clear Theo is struggling.
As Michael is speaking with Theo, Harper begins to crash, and she's rushed into surgery. Before Ben enters the OR, TJ informs Ben he couldn’t find any papers with similar injuries, so he called around to rural hospitals and found a few cases, which allowed him to form a strategy. They need to treat it as a tumor and remove it fast.
Ben is able to stabilize Harper and then turns his attention back to Theo's dad. He and TJ scrub in to perform the surgery, with Amy and Kyle joining them in the OR to monitor the patient's oxygen levels. At the same time, Theo's mom begins to crash, and Gina pieces together that she seems to have gotten an infection from the deer's blood.
Ben and TJ get to work on removing the antlers following TJ’s plan and work fast to repair the damage. His oxygen begins crashing as Amy jumps in to work on removing the air from his line. Thankfully, the surgery goes well, and Theo's father pulls through. His dad isn't the only one who turns the corner, as Harper also recovers well following her second surgery, and things are trending in the right direction with his mom as well.
As the day winds down, Peter comes to see Jake and praises him for a job well done today. He tells Jake to go home and enjoy a night with his ex-wife as Sonya overhears as she encourages him to tell Amy before she’s blindsided.
Amy comes to check on Sonya to ask how things went with Ruth before stepping away to speak with Kyle. She admits she knows her old reputation, and her behavior today likely reinforced what she's heard. He notes that he learned a lot today as she apologized for her behavior today.
Doc season 3 episode 2 explains how Amy and Ben met
Between the chaos of the day, Doc helps to fill audiences in on how Ben and Amy first met. Early in the episode, we flash back to four years earlier, where Amy is speaking at a medical conference. When she opens the panel up to Q&A, Ben pushes back on her approach, and the pair engage in a bit of verbal sparring. After the exchange, Ben catches up with Amy and invites her to join him for a drink.
Later, we drop in on Ben and Amy enjoying a drink at the bar, and she grills him on his personal life. At the time, Ben was recently divorced, and he's quick to point out to Amy that their separation wasn’t amicable. When she presses him for more information, he assures Amy he was never unfaithful; they just weren’t a fit. He asks Amy about herself, but she clams up rather than opening up about her own situation.
Following their drinks at the hotel bar, Ben asks how she’d rate things, as quips that his hospital hosted the conference. To his surprise, Amy tells him to ask her again in ten minutes as she invites him upstairs to her room. The pair enter the elevator, but they don't wait until they reach her room and begin kissing in the elevator.
In the present day, following the successful surgery, Ben admits that he wasn’t sure Amy was still the same doctor she used to be, and she presses him, wondering if this is personal. She informs him she gets memories, hinting that she's starting to piece together that there was something between them.
He admits he began to text her but wasn’t sure how to tell her. He then tells her about their long-distance dalliance, where they’d mostly hook up at conferences, and he mentions her doing a preliminary review of his trials. She asks how it ended between them, and he notes he petered out with no hard feelings, assuring her they’re good. However, the memories we saw definitely seem to suggest there was more between the pair than he's letting on.
Speaking of relationships, the episode ends with a bit of an unexpected development in which it becomes clear that another one of Amy's former loves could be her undoing.
As the day ends, Michael speaks with Max, who points out that Amy is making waves. Max makes it clear that Michael's success as chief of medicine is dependent on Amy’s success, and he cannot give her the same leeway as he’s given her in the past. Michael suggests that his life would be easier without her here and assures Max that if Amy foes anything to jeopardize the hospital, he’ll be the first to show her to the door.
Whether Michael will actually follow through with that promise he made to Max? We don't know, but it's clear Amy could be walking a fine line and the season has only just begun!
