Gary Callahan's past is tied directly with Mike Franks

The promo showed the team on a regular call, but when they sent Gary Callahan into the woods, something happened that led to him being harmed. Of course, we don’t know if the German Shepherd will be okay, but based on some sneak peeks, we have an idea of how the show will follow his origin story.

We have slowly gotten to know the original team from Gibbs’s early life, and of course, Gary Callahan now has the floor. In addition to finding out his story, this will also lead us to discovering how Mike Franks got involved with NIS.

The synopsis for the episode states the team will be working hard to find out who “critically wounded” Gary Callahan while viewers will learn about Franks’s life before he became an NIS agent. We learned more about his early life before he joined the military, so this will answer how he eventually got his NIS gig.

Since this is also Franks's origin story for NIS, we will see the return of his ex-girlfriend, Tish (Tonantzin Carmelo), who left after Franks began investigating the person who assaulted her despite her wishes. Sneak peeks show how she gave Franks the idea to give Gary Callahan a place with the K9 unit at NIS.

Of course, we do not know what the dog’s fate will be, but with how important he is to Franks and the rest of the team, it’s very likely going to be a highly emotional episode. Whether or not Gary Callahan survives his injury, dogs are always a sensitive spot for audiences. So if you need to skip this episode and wait to find out if Gary Callahan survives, it is understandable.

NCIS: Origins airs Tuesdays on CBS at 9/8c. Episodes are available the next day on Paramount+.
