Elsbeth is taking a break for a few weeks, but we know when it’ll be returning to CBS! The break also isn't bad news for the show's future.
Elsbeth has found its groove in its second season. Viewers have fallen in love with the show as Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) aids the NYPD in solving murders with her quirky mind.
The series succeeds thanks to its unique format as most episodes open by showing the viewer who the killer is. Some stories do play on that a bit to make it more of a mystery, but either way, it’s delightful to watch Elsbeth match wits with the killer and figure out the truth. The show also has a bevy of great guest stars as the killers to spark it more.
The series earned a third season renewal last month, with Season 2 going strong on Thursday nights. However, starting March 20, the show will be taking time off.
Why is Elsbeth taking time off?
The reason why Elsbeth is taking a break is simple: March Madness.
CBS viewers have become used to the fact that in the last two weeks of March, CBS interrupts programming on weekends in order to present the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The first rounds are the biggest deals, with sports fans tuning in to see possible upset victories and who gets ahead.
This means that Elsbeth won’t air on Thursday, March 20 or Thursday, March 27. Thankfully, the show is confirmed to return at its regular time slot on Thursday, April 3.
What’s coming on Elsbeth’s return?
The last episode of Elsbeth had a big moment for the show. After so long trying, Elsbeth’s faithful partner, Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), was finally promoted to detective. That meant she could take a bigger role with Elsbeth’s aide while Elsbeth also worked with a new patrol officer, Nikki Reynolds.
The next new episode, “Hot Tub Crime Machine,” will guest-star Mary-Louise Parker as a “decluttering expert” who goes to extremes to take out a romantic partner.
“After a man’s suspicious death in a hot tub, Elsbeth consults his wife, Freya (Mary-Louise Parker), a decluttering guru whose less-is-more philosophy and controlling personality appear at odds with her “throuple” relationship.”
It looks like Blanke may be absent this episode as Elsbeth works with young tech-loving Detective Edwards (Micaela Diamond). Hopefully, Blanke does pop up in the case. It’s also likely we’ll get more of the subplot of Elsbeth going against corrupt Judge Crawford (played by Preston’s real-life husband Michael Emerson).
So Elsbeth is taking a break for a couple of weeks, but fans can expect her to be back on the case before long!
Elsbeth Season 2 returns Thursday, April 3 at 10/9c on CBS.
