For almost a decade, Dick Wolf's fictionalized take on major intelligence agencies has entertained audiences with its exciting characters and thrilling storylines. And while the FBI franchise has expanded and contracted over the years, it remains a prominent feature of modern broadcast television.
Now, with FBI and CIA in their ninth and second seasons, respectively, fans are looking to see how much the two shows will interact.
FBI and CIA showrunner Mike Weiss told TV Insider that it's his goal for FBI and CIA characters to cross over "wherever it makes sense."
Things kicked off with FBI's season 9 premiere, when CIA's Necar Zadegan guest-starred as Nikki. Weiss notes that FBI fans will see her again, as the character will make periodic appearances throughout season 9.
"So Nikki is going to come in and consult on some other cases that make sense where it’s an international threat," Weiss revealed. "She’s going to find herself showing up at 26 Fed occasionally or just helping Jubal [Jeremy Sisto] out with intelligence."
Nikki was vital to helping 26 Fed take down those responsible for executing scientists involved in the government's top-secret nuclear program, Project Jehovah. As a result, her expertise will continue to come in handy as the FBI encounters international threats in season 9.
Weiss also revealed that two major characters from FBI will return the favor by assisting the CIA in their operations.
"Jubal and Ian Lim [James Chen] are going to find themselves working a little bit here and there, helping Bill out on CIA ops." Weiss shared. "We have a really big Jubal and Nikki episode that I can’t quite talk about yet, but where he’s going to be more involved in a CIA operation than any of these other smaller little crossover moments."
Agent Bill Goodman is an FBI agent on loan to the CIA, but he often asks his FBI colleagues for help to solve cases. This includes last season's major storyline involving a mole at the CIA. Both Jubal and Ian make appearances to help Bill decipher information and collect evidence. That storyline has since wrapped, but Bill has a new mystery where he could use Jubal and Ian's expertise.
In CIA's season 2 premiere, we learned that Bill's father may have become a CIA agent after leaving the military. The revelation shocked Bill and will most likely have serious ramifications for both his career and his personal life.
FBI and CIA air Mondays on CBS.
