The finale of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins was a simple yet satisfying conclusion to the first season. Upon a summer rewatch, one of the strengths of the first season is that the show never gets ahead of itself and yet finds its own heart in each episode.
The last episode of the first season is called "A Real Cinderello Story." It deals with Reggie's rival trying to get his best friend, Rusty, into the Hall of Fame to upset and hurt Reggie. The B-story also looks at if Monica can secure another client besides Reggie.
The show is simple in the fact that you can know there will be a happy ending. Rusty blows his chances to get in the Hall and the committee gives Reggie four votes to get in. It is a simple moment, but everyone seems to be happy for him. It is a reminder of how strong the ensemble is.
Monica, with the help of Reggie's legacy, secures the client as well. It shows that despite his struggles, Reggie did influence the game of football.
Perhaps the best part of the finale is by Arthur (Daniel Radcliffe). Throughout the episode, he is asking the question to both the documentary crew and the audience as to whose story this is.
It is an interesting approach and also one that allows the audience to look at the growth of each character objectively as the finale and first season come to a close.
With the second season on the horizon, it will be interesting to see where they go from here. It was revealed that Reggie's son, Carmelo, is dating his rival's daughter. That should lead to many fun comedic moments between Tracy Morgan and his rival, Jerry Basmati, played by Craig Robinson.
Also, the question of Reggie and Brina's wedding and how he will continue to clean up his image should give the audience a lot to work with and look forward to as the second season gets underway.
Sports shows are tricky with a sense of both realism and escapism at the same time. During the finale and rewatch of the entire season, this comedy threads that needle very well.
The ensemble really began clicking in the finale, and hopefully that chemistry will carry right over into the second season. Thankfully, the audience only has to wait a few months before The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins kicks off its second season.
