It’s time for the fourth Halloween episode of Ghosts. Sam and Jay have a quiet one this year, but Patience has other plans.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 3.

With a Puritan ghost in the house, Sam and Jay decide they should have a quiet Halloween. Patience is already certain that Sam is a witch, and she decides it’s time to have a witch trial to prove it. Of course, with the decision of a quiet Halloween, the rest of the spirits join in with the witch trial.

How does the witch trial turn out? What happens to Sam? Maybe Patience should be treated a little more seriously from now on.

Patience puts Sam on trial in Ghosts season 4, episode 3

Sam isn’t all that happy about not doing a bit Halloween thing in the house. This is her holiday, so she decides to dress up anyway. As she shows off her dress, which is actually one of Hetty’s dress, the ghosts inform Sam that she is being put on trial as a witch.

Sam tells them to have some fun. She isn’t going to be involved in this, as she and Jay are having a yard sale. Poor Flower thinks that means the actual yard is being sold, but it’s actually a chance to sell some of Hetty’s items. And maybe Jay’s as they keep ending up outside somehow.

During Sam’s trial, she’s found guilty. Patience sentences her to petrification, and it looks like it happens. Alberta, Hetty, and Trevor go outside to find a statue that looks very much like Sam.

The ghosts need to get Patience on their side to turn her back. However, the ghosts need to stop Jay from selling the Sam Statue first! Of course, the guy Jay sold the statue to isn’t just some random guy who likes statues. He was looking for items to blow up for his YouTube channel.

Jay has to get the statue back

While Jay can’t communicate with the ghosts, there is a way to let him know what’s going on. Trevor is able to message Jay from the iPad, which leads to Jay (and Pete) heading out to Kaboom Boy’s house. While there, Pete comes across another ghost, and I do hope that we see Sam head back there to interact with him.

Just as Patience shares how the ghosts could get Sam back (all because Isaac threatens to tell everyone how Patience danced to a diabetes commercial), Jay knocks the statue over and knocks its head off. Just as you would think, Sam steps out. She wasn’t the statue after all. It happened to be something Hetty and her husband just bought at auction and forgot about it because they liked to wave the paddles. Oh Hetty!

There were some great mentions about powers in this episode. There’s a tease of Hetty getting a power at some point. She really tried to conjure one during the episode when she thought she needed to save Sam. I do think this shows just how far Hetty has come. The first season Hetty wouldn’t have cared.

Then there were a few mentions of Alberta’s power of humming. Look, it’s cool, but Patience’s blood power is far scarier.

The ending of the episode is so sweet. Jay and Sam have a cute moment as Jay notes everything that he loves about Sam.

Of course, then there came the big twist. Patience shares that she will return to the dirt after failing being tested aboveground. Only she’s returning to the “others.” Who are the “others?” I guess that’s something we’ll be exploring this season.

Ghosts airs Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
